Digital Scholarship & Data Services Manager

We are seeking a DigitalScholarship & Data Services (DSDS) Managerto drive adoption of digital scholarship and open science practices at Hopkins through creative and strategic senior leadership. The DSDS department encompasses data services, geographic information systems (GIS), digital scholarship, scholarly communications, digital content and collections management, and digital humanities.

This position will oversee a team focused on growing the digital skills of the Hopkins community, support new modes of scholarly communications, and facilitate the dissemination and preservation of the University's scholarly output, ensuring that research is accessible, reproducible, and sustainable. This position is patron-focused and responsible for developing service improvements and leadership for operational initiatives and policies for assigned areas.

The DSDS Manager works through highly collaborative relationships across the Libraries, including with the Academic Liaison Division, Special Collections curators, the Library Applications Group, and the Digital Research and Curation Center (DRCC). Further, the DSDS Manager will work closely with colleagues across the University, including research computing, research administration, and academic deans to support evolving forms of scholarship and research across Hopkins.

As a departmental manager, this position will develop and articulate a strategic vision for the department, aligning with the broader goals of Sheridan Libraries and the University and create and implement actionable plans to achieve the department's objectives, including timelines, budgets, and resource allocation. The role will manage 14 FTE employees and report to the Associate Dean, Technology Strategy & Digital Services.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provides direction, vision, and leadership for the Sheridan Libraries' role supporting and coordinating Digital Scholarship & Data Services at Johns Hopkins.
  • Operationalizes strategic priorities and goals within the department.
  • Manages a growing team of approximately 14 FTE employees, fostering collegial teamwork between the department staff.
  • Builds and maintains strategic partnerships and collaboration within the library, and with other campus constituencies and with external peers.
  • Works closely with the Library Applications Group and DRCC to provide product ownership of digital scholarship technology and applications - representing patron and user needs.
  • Leads all operational aspects of the department, including budget administration, human resources, and assessment.
  • Fosters a patron focused service environment informed by user assessment.
  • Manages and pursues endowments, grant awards, and fellowship opportunities that advance services.
  • Engages with and contributes to national conversations relating to scholarly communications, digital scholarship, open access, digital humanities, geospatial science, and demonstrating a thorough understanding of trends.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Note: The referenced salary range is based on Johns Hopkins University's good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level.



Minimum Qualifications
  • ALA accredited Masters in Library/Information Science or equivalent combination of advanced degree and relevant experience.
  • Five years professional experience including significant management experience within a research library (or related) environment, supervisory experience, and budgetary experience.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Three or more years of supervisory, leadership, and project management experience.
  • Experience creating or contributing to grant applications to major funding agencies.
