Minimum Qualifications

  • Earned terminal degree in graphic design, visual communication design, interactive design ( expected by January 1, 2025) or BFA in Graphic Design with at least five years of professional experience
  • Experience with designing for print or interactive media

The art department is seeking candidates who can demonstrate proficiency with software and technologies relevant to graphic design and digital media who have experience with or potential for the following:

  • Extending the practice of design beyond traditional boundaries
  • Collaboration in creative practice and/or teaching
  • Graphic design industry experience
  • Educating and mentoring students of diverse backgrounds and demographics

Description of the Department or Unit
The BFA Graphic Design program is strongly rooted in the design process, typography, visual systems, collaborative practices and design thinking. Our goal is to empower students with a strong, personal voice and the ability to design in a variety of settings, navigate increasingly complex projects, and contribute to positive social change.
The Department of Art is NASAD-accredited and has over 45 full-time faculty members, 776 undergraduate majors (217 of which are Graphic Design) and offers BFA degrees in Art Education, Graphic Design, Photography, and Studio Art; a BA degree with concentrations in Art History, Art Management, and Studio Art; and a BS degree in Graphic Communications Management.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach four courses per semester (12 hours) in person at the Boone campus in all areas of graphic design practice, but primarily in introductory graphic design and typography classes. Additional teaching responsibilities may include curriculum development and, based upon the candidate's skills and interests, design history and theory, foundations, illustration or other related areas. The position is a full-time, non-tenure track position.
  • Contribute to service activities such as student recruitment and other departmental activities.

Suggested Salary Range Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

ABD Description
ABD with reduction in rank and salary: ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate's salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.

No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position. Since ABD will not meet the minimum requirements, ABD will not be considered.
