GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

Under general supervision and following established procedures, operates CT equipment (e.g. CT scanner, Power Injector, Laser Printer, Patient monitoring devices, etc.) to acquire images for use by physicians in diagnosis and treatment of pathologies. Staff will be required to float among radiology clinics and divisions associated with BWH as needed. These sites are, but not limited to: 75 Francis Street Boston MA. 850 Boylston Street Chestnut Hill Ma, and 20 Patriot Place Foxborough, Ma.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:




  • Operates CT equipment to obtain diagnostic images and information according to departmental protocol. In doing so, ensures the patient is properly prepared, positioned, immobilized and uses protective shield on the patient as needed. Selects proper imaging factors, and images the designated portion(s) of the body.

  • Explains exam to patient taking into consideration physical and emotional needs; maintains ethical standards (patient confidentiality, professional conduct, etc.). Delivers patient care under scope of license / training.

  • To maintain effective working relations and communication with departmental and other hospital personnel, i.e. professional, nursing, etc.

  • Calibrate and verify the operation of all equipment to be used during the work day. To notify appropriate personnel of equipment malfunctions and repairs needed.

  • Execute paperwork and Radiology Information System functions as necessary for each patient exam (e.g. schedule exam, complete exam, transfer images to PACS, etc.).

  • Performs venipuncture for purposes of contrast administration under the direction of a radiologist. Follow all hospital and departmental contrast administration policies and procedures.

  • Attend staff meetings, in-services, and maintains appropriate CEU's in accordance with Massachusetts State Licensure and A.R.R.T. (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) requirements.

  • May oversee and instruct various personnel and technology students (medical radiography, CT, nuclear medicine) within the department.

  • Prepare the equipment room and supplies necessary for each patient and regular daily use. Stock and supply room as needed.

  • To acknowledge and participate in research programs, quality assurance and quality improvement projects carried on in the department (i.e. cost containment).

  • To assume responsibilities for on-call coverage and to remain flexible in all shift coverage and overtime situations as necessary.

  • Rotates within department, divisions and all off-site clinics, by shifts as required and needed; cooperates with all personnel, promoting harmony within department

  • Transport and transfer patients using established procedures according to departmental guidelines.

  • Uses independent judgment, ingenuity and initiative under pressure in a variety of situations when performing patient exams.

  • Performs point-of-care (POC) creatinine testing at applicable sites and upon completion of training.

  • Performs all other duties as directed.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:




  • Must be a graduate of an approved school of Radiologic technology; possess a current Massachusetts State Radiologic Technologist license and be registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or equivalent.

  • Be Registered or eligible for certification in CT by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists or equivalent is required. Must meet, successfully complete, and maintain the ARRT or equivalent CT certification and registration within one year of start of employment.

  • 2-3 years' experience as a Radiologic technologist preferred with at least one year in cross-sectional anatomy courses.

  • Must be BLS (Basic Life Support) certified. Must meet and obtain BLS certification within one year of start of employment


SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:




  • Must have interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively with patients who may be under physical and / or emotional stress.

  • Must possess analytical abilities necessary to acquire and effectively utilize knowledge of imaging processes, techniques, and procedures and cross sectional anatomy.

  • Work requires several weeks of training to acquire necessary familiarity with imaging procedures, techniques and methods.

  • Must have the ability to adapt to changing pace within the department, with frequent interruptions.

  • Presents a positive attitude and a professional appearance.

  • Must be physically capable of lifting, (linen, supplies, patients, etc.).

  • Comprehensive understanding of computer operations relating to Digital Imaging, the Radiology Information System and all Hospital Information Systems that integrate with the Department of Radiology relating to patient information and management (Epic, Order entry systems, PACS ect.).

  • Must demonstrate flexibility and willingness to adapt to diverse roles as a member of the department team.

  • Must be aware of hazards within the department (ionizing radiation, universal precautions, etc.) and adhere to safety standards established by BWH and regulatory agencies.

  • Able to work in changing environments (reduced lighting, increased noise, temperature variances, unpleasant odors, etc.).

  • Communication skills sufficient to resolve conflicts, and relay information concisely to staff, patients and other hospital personnel.


WORKING CONDITIONS:




  • Duties include patient care responsibilities with subsequent exposure to human waste, and similar unpleasant elements.

  • Failure to follow established procedures and safety practices could result in exposure to radioactivity.

  • Subject to frequent stressful situations.

  • Lifting and transferring patients from table to stretcher.

  • Periodic exposure to noise and cold environment plus poor lighting.
