Seasonal Assistant City Highway Repairer

Performs general labor tasks while assisting in the repair and maintenance of roadways and arterial highways. Duties include, but are not limited to, assisting in the laying of hot-mix asphalt and other kinds of pavement; cleaning construction and repair sites by sweeping and removing debris; assisting in general roadway construction tasks, including raking, shoveling, tampering asphalt, pothole repair, mowing grass, guiderail repair, fencing, and debris removal. Assists in foundation laying and in installing shoring and sheeting for road depressions and excavations; assists in the operation of portable or towed power equipment and attachments required for maintenance operations; lays out and cares for tools needed for maintenance and repair operations; assists in loading and unloading materials, equipment, and other items. Candidates will also perform tasks such as snow removal when weather conditions prevent paving operations. Assists in general vehicle maintenance, including checks of oil and fuel levels, lights, horns, and brakes; cleans vehicle interiors and exteriors when required; performs general laboring tasks as directed by the supervisor; may use picks or other equipment to clean and prepare defective areas for patching; may operate a motorized vehicle in maintenance operations; may be required to safely direct traffic around large construction projects.

This is a nine-month seasonal position starting in March and ending in December each year, with the possibility of permanent appointment. This position is subject to pre-employment medical, drug screening, and random drug testing.

Selected candidate must be available to work in any borough, on any shift, or any tour (days and nights). Preference will be given to candidates possessing a Class "A" or Class "B" NYS Commercial Driver License.

2. There are certain medical and physical requirements.
License Requirement
A Driver License valid in the State of New York is required at the time of appointment. A Class B Commercial Driver License is required within ninety days of the date of appointment. There may be certain age requirements to obtain this license.

PREFERENCE WILL BE GIVEN TO CANDIDATE POSSESSING CLASS "A" OR CLASS "B" COMMERCIAL DRIVER'S LICENSE (CDL) OR CDL PERMIT VALID IN THE STATE OF NEW YORK.

Residency Requirement

/New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
