The Microbiology Laboratory is a CLIA certified clinical laboratory that specializes in the performance of routine and specialized clinical laboratory analyses in all major sections of the Microbiology Laboratory. Recognizes routine problems, identifies causes, synthesizes alternatives, and applies solutions. Confirms and verifies results through an in-depth knowledge of techniques, principles, and instrumentation. Correlates and interprets data based on knowledge of technical, instrumental, and physiological conditions affecting test results. Participates in the laboratory Quality Control and Quality Assurance programs.

Responsibilities

  • 1. Understands and is able to apply basic principles of microbiology, laboratory procedure, theory, and techniques; understands instrumentation and equipment while demonstrating good judgment in their use.
  • 2. After initial orientation, is proficient in the interpretation of bacterial, fungal, and mycobacterial cultures, the interpretation of identification and susceptibility of bacteria, yeast, and mold isolates. Competency is evaluated through direct observation, internal and external proficiency samples, and clinical error report with minimal analytical errors reported.
  • 3. Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of specimen collection and processing, including quality assessment, volume requirements, and storage conditions.
  • 4. Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of Quality Control data assessment; documents QC and corrective actions.
  • 5. Learns new procedures readily according to training schedule.
  • 6. Participates in inventory control including reagent and quality control preparation and verification/validation according to regulatory guidelines.
  • 7. Independently troubleshoot and follow up on any problems/issues including documentation and escalation if required.
  • 8. Collaborate on standard operating procedures revisions/drafts as needed to adjust for process improvement initiatives and regulatory changes.
  • 9. Able to navigate and show competency with the use of LIS applications. Can utilize the LIS to report, identify, and troubleshoot specimens effectively.
  • 10. Proficient in the use of LIS applications, software programs, Word, Excel, Outlook and other internal tracking databases.
  • 11. Demonstrates organizational skills to prioritize work according to urgency and medical need. Performs multiple tasks to optimize efficiency.
  • 12. Demonstrates a positive approach to learning new or existing methods, techniques and/or procedures. Accepts constructive criticism in a positive manner and takes corrective action to improve performance in problem areas.
  • 13. Participates in teaching lab personnel, students and lab residents following established laboratory procedures in a courteous professional manner. Always maintains a positive, respectful relationship with learner.
  • 14. Participates in the department?s continuing education program and documents a minimum of 12 education credits annually.
  • 15. Adheres to laboratory policies and procedures, regulatory requirements, hospital attendance and tardiness policies, and demonstration of mutual respect for all laboratory personnel.
  • 16. Exhibit excellent customer service skills; collaborates with other departments and clients regarding inquiries and test results.
  • 17. Demonstrates a commitment to quality patient care.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology, Microbiology or equivalent. MT(ASCP), M(ASCP), SM(ASCP) or equivalent eligibility required; certification preferred. Transcript and diploma review required to determine eligibility for performing high complexity testing if not ASCP certified.

EXPERIENCE

One (1) or two (2) years experience in an accredited Clinical Laboratory.

LICENSURE

MT(ASCP), M(ASCP), SM(ASCP) or equivalent eligibility required; certification preferred.

SPECIAL SKILLS

Working knowledge of equipment, instrumentation, and materials used in the Clinical Laboratory. Experience with computer technology including efficiency in word processing applications, spreadsheet design and data analysis. Ability to work as a member of a diverse team is essential. Excellent organizational skills required. Strong working knowledge of microbiology theory preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMAND

Must be able to tolerate PPE required to work in a BSL2 or BSL3 laboratory.
