About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking a Cultural Resources Technician - Historian to join our Hawai'i Cultural Resources Program to work on projects throughout the Hawaiian Islands. This position is temporary, and work is currently dependent upon project needs, with the potential to evolve into a full time, benefits eligible position. Candidates must live in Hawai'i and compensation will be based on individual qualifications and experience.

What you will accomplish

The ideal candidate should have experience in conducting historic research and possess a detailed knowledge of Hawaiian culture and history. Successful applicants must be able to undertake ethnohistoric background research and assist in the preparation of Traditional Cultural Properties Studies, Cultural Impact Assessments, Cultural Assessments, Ka Pa'akai Analyses, and the cultural components of Environmental Assessments.


Experience and qualifications for success

  • Bachelor's degree in history, anthropology, archaeology, Hawaiian studies, or a closely related field preferred, not required
  • Detailed knowledge of Hawaiian culture and history
  • The ability to conduct archival research
  • Familiarity with historic document sources (Mhele land records, historic survey maps, etc.)
  • Knowledge of mapping and GIS software is an advantage, but is not required for the position
  • The ability to assist in the preparation of technical reports
  • Hawaiian language proficiency preferred
  • Must live in Hawai'i, Oahu preferred. Those located in surrounding islands outside of Oahu are encouraged to apply and be willing to conduct in-person research in Honolulu-based archives when necessary.

An employee in this Honolulu, HI based position can expect an hourly rate of $19.69 -$25.99. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
