DESCRIPTION

The Library Safety & Security Program (LSS) is responsible for safety, security, and emergency preparedness services for the UC San Diego Library. The mission of the Library Safety & Security Program is to protect the users, employees, collections, equipment, and facilities of the UCSD Library; to provide leadership in emergency and disaster preparedness and response; and to maintain a welcoming, safe, and secure Library environment for all users.

Provides continuous foot patrol of the Geisel Library building, the WongAvery Library building, and other Library facilities and venues as assigned, including stairwells, walkways, stacks, public and staff areas, and building exteriors. Responsible for a high volume of public contact and service, including but not limited to, giving directions, other assistance, and general crime prevention. Mandatory participation in safety and security training, customer service training and UC sponsored training. Responsible for the safety and security of the Geisel Library 24 hour overnight study commons during academic sessions. Directs the work of student employees provided by UCSD Police. Prepares and submits electronically, detailed written incident reports and a daily activity log. LSS Officers monitor the CCTV system, alarms, intercoms and the access control system; including arming the security system and securing all zones at closing. Navigate security systems to respond to incidents, complete reports and conduct follow-up investigations. Conducts patrols and checks for facility maintenance problems, unlawful acts and violations of the Library Use and Conduct Policy. Reports any problems immediately in accordance with policy. Handles emergency situations and building evacuations as established by policy and procedure. Interfaces with the UC Police Department, its Community Service Officers and Library Public Service staff. Handles all library materials according to accepted preservation practices. Provide security at all library facilities including Scripps Institute of Oceanography (SIO), Library Annex and other venues as determined.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Working experience as a security officer or other relevant experience.

  • Ability to operate telephones, 2-way radios, public address systems, and other communication devices appropriately and professionally.

  • Ability to use CCTV, access control and alarm monitoring systems.

  • Experience de-escalating situations including hostile or violent behavior.

  • Ability to maintain regular attendance and punctuality.

  • Ability to handle a high degree of public contact calmly, courteously, appropriately, and effectively.

  • Excellent knowledge of public and workplace safety and security procedures and protocols, including rights of citizens and applicable law.

  • Ability to remain calm, take appropriate action, assist police and other responders, and maintain a professional and impartial stance in all security, emergency, and/or disaster situations as encountered.

  • Ability to use personal computers, mobile devices, and other standard equipment and applications in a networked environment.

  • Strong verbal, listening, and written communication skills, including report writing skills. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to effectively communicate with students, staff, and public. Ability to work in a team environment.

  • Ability to remain self-motivated, prioritize effectively, follow established procedures, and conduct self ethically and appropriately with minimal direct supervision.

  • Ability to exercise proper discretion and confidentiality when dealing with sensitive information obtained in the line of duty; knowledge of appropriate techniques to elicit information.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Regular work schedule during academic session: Thursday-Monday 4:00AM-11:30PM (Varied Shift). Must be able to adjust work schedule to meet organizational and operational needs, including but not limited to, summer session, intersession, extended hours, other employee time off and holiday coverage.

  • Adherence to the UCSD Libraries General Standards for Security Officers document that includes expectations for personal appearance, technical knowledge, report writing, customer service, work habits, specific job functions, and attendance standards for security personnel.

  • Must have current CPR/AED and State of California Security Guard (BSIS) certification by employment start date.

  • Must have a valid California Driver's License and maintain a good driving record. Pepper spray, handcuffing and 832pc certifications a plus.

  • Background and DMV check required.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $49,882 - $65,772 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $23.89 - $31.50

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
