Job Description
Southwest Virginia Community College ( SWCC) offers career-training programs in numerous technical, industrial and medical fields at a reasonable cost, going so far as to even waive tuition for certain eligible students. Located in Richlands, Virginia, SWCC offers associate's degrees in such fields as business, education, general studies, liberal arts and science. These degrees are primarily intended for students who wish to transfer to a four-year university. SWCC also has associate degrees that feature programs intended to lead directly to a career in fields such as Nursing, Radiography and Administration of Justice.

Southwest Virginia is seeking a motivated individual to fill the role of EMS Program Director. This is a full-time, ten-month teaching position that reports directly to the Dean of Health Technologies and indirectly to the Vice President of Academic and Student Services at Southwest Virginia Community College. Reappointment is based on performance and institutional needs.

The primary responsibility of a member of the teaching faculty in the Virginia Community College System shall be to provide quality instruction for students. At Southwest, the major emphasis shall be on excellent teaching by working with students in classrooms and/or laboratories, through individual conferences, various distance education media, and related activities. Our goal is to help students develop their interests and abilities to the fullest capacity in order to become better persons, better workers, and better citizens. Other duties shared by teaching faculty include participation in reaccreditation efforts, student advising, student activities, sponsorship of student organizations, supervision of work-study students, college service activities, professional development activities, and community service.

The Southwest Virginia Paramedic Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP).

JOB RESPONSIBILITES INCLUDE:

  • Providing professional leadership and supervision to EMS faculty.
  • Overseeing the preparation of the Course of Study of each EMS course and ensuring that the required documentation is provided.
  • Preparing budget estimates for personnel, supplies, and equipment for the program.
  • Assuming responsibility for all departmental equipment and supplies, including inventory management.
  • Orienting new instructors to the program, expectations, and the courses they are teaching.
  • Providing leadership for implementing institutional effectiveness processes within the program including, but not limited to the following: strategic planning, program review, student outcomes assessment, core competency testing, and graduate follow-up, using a variety of measures and institutional data to improve the program and processes as determined necessary and appropriate.
  • Recommending to the Dean of Health Technologies new program personnel.
  • Developing a detailed schedule of EMS classes for the Dean of Health Technologies.
  • Providing input to the Dean of Health Technologies as they prepare written evaluations of each member of the EMS faculty, according to the Southwest evaluation plan and making recommendations regarding promotions and multi-year appointments.
  • Maintaining records of program activities and making recommendations for changes in policies and regulations.
  • Assuming responsibility for seeing that an effective program of student advising and student scheduling is maintained for EMS.
  • Directing selection and admission of students to the program.
  • Developing and maintaining cooperative agreements with health care agencies and Southwest.
  • Representing the Southwest VA EMS program at state and national meetings.
  • Responsible for the meticulous maintenance of accreditation documents, ensuring that all necessary records are kept up-to-date and readily accessible. This includes organizing and tracking required documentation for compliance with accreditation standards. Additionally, prepare detailed reports for the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP) as required. This involves compiling data, analyzing outcomes, and ensuring that all submissions meet the specific guidelines and deadlines set by these accrediting bodies. Attention to detail and strong organizational skills will be crucial in this role to uphold the integrity and accreditation status of the program.
  • Presiding at departmental Advisory Committee meetings and preparing the agenda for each meeting.
  • Assisting the faculty and Enrollment Services staff with the pre-admission process.
  • Directing publicity and marketing for the program, including college catalog and web-based information.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor

This is an in-person position, not a remote position.
Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree or higher in a related field
  • Documented education or experience in instructional methodology
  • Academic training and experience equivalent to that of a paramedi.
  • Experience in the delivery of prehospital emergency care
  • Knowledge about the current versions of the National EMS Scope of Practice and National EMS Education Standards, and above evidenced-informed clinical practice
  • Must be in good standing with the Office of EMS with no enforcement or correction action
  • Must be certified at or above the level of Paramedic
  • Must be certified as an Education Coordinator
  • Proficient with computer technology including use of a PC and relevant software such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, faculty and staff, and other stakeholders important to the College
  • Two years related clinical experience
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
