Co-op - Structures (Spring/Summer '25)

This position is for a Virginia Tech co-op student in the Spring / Summer term. Length of internship is approximately six months from Jan 2025 through May 2025. This is a full time (40 hours per week) position based out of the Richmond office. Job responsibilities include assisting with structural engineering assignments such as plan development, structure and bridge design, structure and bridge analysis, bridge inspections, quantity calculations, and cost estimating. Other duties are assigned as required.

Basic Functions:



  • Work on projects throughout the mid-Atlantic region including design of retaining walls, box culverts, pedestrian and vehicular bridges, quantity take-offs and cost estimating, and providing creative solutions to complex projects.
  • Assist with the bridge safety inspections
  • Assist with the research and analysis of structure related topics.


Required Qualifications:



  • Currently pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering with an interest in structural engineering
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Self-motivated with a strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Valid driver's license


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Classwork in structural engineering
  • Participation in professional societies (ASCE, ITE)
  • Applicable prior intern (Co-Op) experience
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD, MicroStation
  • Exposure to traffic related software (STAAD, BrR, OpenBridge)
