Position description

As a Project Scientist, you will be expected to design and carry out experiments on the effects of electric fields on collective cell migration, and the signaling, molecular and genetic mechanisms. You will be responsible for collecting experimental results, analyzing and interpreting those results, and making conclusions. Your primary goals include writing up manuscripts to report your discoveries to the laboratory, department, and scientific meetings and journals. You are also encouraged to write grant proposals, and fellowship proposals to expand your career future. You will also be encouraged to participate in the management of the laboratory, inter-laboratories, and department service. The primary techniques include cell culture, electrotaxis experiments, cell migration analysis, signaling inhibition, cell imaging, genetic and pharmacological manipulation of cellular responses to electric stimulation, and advanced microscopy. The long-term goal is to understand how to manipulate cells with electrical stimulation to achieve better healing and regeneration. This appointment will be at 70% FTE.


Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

PhD in the fields related to cell biology, biomedical engineering, or bioelectricity/bioengineering. Three or more years of research experience in the research area of cell migration and wound healing related to the eye and skin. Extensive experience in the development and application of novel molecular, cellular, and genetic tools to in vitro and in vivo study of cellular responses to electrical signals. Extensive experience with microscopy, image processing, and analysis for multimodal sequential data sets acquired. Experience with immunohistochemistry, cell and tissue cultures, and application of electric stimulation to cells and tissues would be considered a plus. Excellent knowledge of eye anatomy and function and prior experience with tissue cultures, cell biology, and animal handling is required. Extensive experience with general laboratory software and Excellent publication record and communication skills will be highly valued.

Preferred qualifications (other preferred, but not required, qualifications for the position)

Ability to design and implement advanced imaging techniques for cell and tissue cultures. Ability to develop independently as well as a team member in a multidisciplinary consortium. Ability to initiate and lead subprojects, preparing manuscript and grant drafts.
