HJF is seeking an On-Call Staff Research Nurse who coordinates activities associated with treating patients for clinical trials and assures accurate documentation is maintained in compliance with regulatory guidelines.

This position will be in support of the US Army Institute of Surgical Research Burn Center, located on Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX. This position will support a research study evaluating whether the compensatory reserve measurement (CRM) provides an earlier indication, than conventional variables, for the onset of hypovolemic shock and the response to resuscitative efforts in patients undergoing active burn-shock resuscitation.

Responsibilities

  • Interviews patients for clinical trials and collects and analyzes data to validate eligibility and patient commitment.
  • Educates patients about the clinical trial, their roles in the protocols, and any other vital information.
  • Provides patients with documentation validating their study participation as needed.
  • Serves as a resource for the patients.
  • Conducts counseling sessions for patients and informs them of their rights and responsibilities.
  • Obtains pre-screening medical documents by communicating with appropriate sources.
  • Acts as a liaison between patients and physicians and as a resource to the patient and patient's family.
  • Collects data appropriate to the research protocol; documents in medical record/research record and on case report forms.
  • May be required to draw blood and obtain other specimens as specified in protocols.
  • Evaluates patient status and appropriately elevates significant findings to the physician.
  • Communicates with full time research nurse and charge nurse to help coordinate patient enrollment.
  • While on call the research nurse is required to respond and intercept the patient at the USAISR Burn Unit within 1 hour.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing required.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years experience required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Required experience working with critically ill patients in an in-patient/hospital setting.
  • Excellent interpersonal and computer skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and to work with individuals of all levels.
  • Preferred experience with maintaining screening and enrollment logs to document study enrollment.
  • Knowledge of federal and local regulations and policies pertinent to research involving human subjects.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1/Public Trust Background Check.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Registered Nurse (RN) licensure.
  • Basic cardiac life support (BCLS) certification.
  • Certification as CCRC or CCRP preferred.

Physical Capabilities

  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in a hospital setting.

Compensation

  • The hourly pay for this position is $35.48-$43.26. Actual hourly pay will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
  • This position will be compensated at the full hourly rate while the incumbent is communicating with the Charge Nurse, enrolling a patient, troubleshooting any equipment, and for any time completing the required documentation. All other time during the shift will be compensated at a decreased rate.
