Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of North Carolina Wilmington invites applications for a postdoctoral scholar to begin in Spring 2025. A UNCW postdoctoral scholar in the College of Science and Engineering is a 12-month full-time temporary non-faculty position.
The primary responsibility of the Postdoctoral scholar will be performing synthetic, organic chemistry research on the NIH-funded project 1R15GM155801-01 in the Morgan laboratory. Research duties will include experimental design and completion, manuscript preparation, graduate and undergraduate student mentoring, and assistance with daily laboratory management.

The opportunity to serve as instructor of record for a lecture course is optional.

UNCW postdoctoral scholars gain important training and research experience through their relationship with the university in ways that support and fulfill the research, scholarship, and teaching missions of the institution. Upon initial appointment, postdoctoral scholars may provide oversight of research projects and personnel, project management, assistance in development and writing of proposals and manuscripts, data acquisition, higher-level interpretation of computational results and comprehensive data analysis. These activities may be carried out in both field and laboratory settings. Postdoctoral scholars will interact with a variety of academic departments, various units within Business Affairs and Academic Affairs and other UNCW departments as needed for project management.
The UNCW postdoctoral scholar will:

  • Have a primary faculty mentor.
  • Develop an Individual Development Plan (IDP) in coordination with their faculty mentor.
  • Participate in professional development programming offered through the University.

Appointment Description
This is a two-year term appointment.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Ph.D. in Chemistry or closely related field, conferred before the appointment start date but no more than five (5) years prior to the appointment start date.

Experience in the synthesis and characterization of organic compounds is required.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience
Research experience in synthetic organic chemistry.

Preferred candidates will have a background in catalytic method development.

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Chemistry & Biochemistry at UNC Wilmington offers exciting, student-oriented programs that award Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Science (BS, ACS Certified), Bachelor of Science (BS) in Biochemistry, Master of Science (MS) degrees and a PhD in Pharmaceutical Chemistry. A significant portion of the training takes place in our laboratories, both those associated with courses, and those involving research in Biochemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Marine and Atmospheric Science, Organic and Inorganic Synthesis, Computational and Physical Chemistry and Chemical Education.
The Department is well equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation on both the main campus ( https://uncw.edu/academics/colleges/cse/departments/chemistry/) and at the Center for Marine Science located 7 miles away on the Intracoastal Waterway ( https://uncw.edu/research/centers/marine-science/). The Department is well equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation including 300-600 MHz NMR spectrometers, several MS instruments managed by a full-time PhD scientist. In addition to rigorous courses in all aspects of chemistry, most of our undergraduate students and all of our local graduate students carry out research under the direct supervision of our outstanding faculty.

College/School Information
The College of Science and Engineering offers a variety of programs leading to Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees, as well as Doctor of Philosophy degrees in applied coastal and ocean sciences; pharmaceutical chemistry; integrative, comparative, and marine biology; and psychology degrees. The college also offers combined bachelor's/master's degree programs in information technology/computer science and information systems, computer science/computer science and information systems, and B.S. in mathematics/M.S. in mathematics. To implement its academic programs, the college provides instruction and research opportunities in the natural and behavioral sciences, information technology, data science, computer science, mathematics, pre-engineering, and engineering. The eight academic departments in the college provide courses of study in each of these areas, in addition to interdepartmental programs in information technology, cybersecurity, and digital arts. Post-baccalaureate certificate programs in environmental studies, applied statistics, and geographic information science are also available.
CSE students work with distinguished faculty and scientists, use cutting edge technology, and conduct impactful research. Faculty-directed research projects empower CSE students to apply what they learn inside the classroom and laboratory to real-world situations and prepares them for a variety of careers or advanced study.
