Work Schedule
8:30 am - 5:00 pm Monday - Friday, with some flexibility on start and end times, as well as occasional evening and weekend hours required, as necessary.
Primary Purpose of Position
Reporting to the Digital Pedagogy & Emerging Technologies Librarian, the Area 49 Makerspace Coordinator manages Area 49's Makerspace within J. Murrey Atkins Library and coordinates activities within it, such as technology use, training, and support services for members of the UNC Charlotte community. The Makerspace Coordinator primarily manages the Area 49 Makerspace and provides direct support for students, faculty and staff using Makerspace technologies, such as 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC routers, and other maker items, but also provides such support throughout the other innovation spaces within Area 49, as needed.
Minimum Education/Experience
Required Minimum Qualifications:

Graduation from a four-year college or university and one year of experience in a library or archives and/or records management; or high school and five years of experience in a library or archives and/or records management; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Essential Job Duties

  • Manages daily operations of the Area 49 Makerspace;
  • Troubleshoots Makerspace technology, as well as technology throughout Area 49;
  • Conducts individual, group, and/or class training sessions and workshops on Makerspace technologies, applications, tools, and skills (and other Area 49 technology, based on the applicant's interest);
  • Handles Makerspace safety concerns and ensures a high standard of safety practices;
  • Maintains supply levels and requests materials;
  • Develops and maintains user guides, training modules, support materials, and Makerspace processes and workflows;
  • Mentors and encourages creativity, exploration, and hands-on learning and serves as a consultant to Makerspace users;
  • Works collaboratively with the Area 49 and other Library colleagues on various projects and initiatives that serve Area 49's user base;

Other Work Responsibilities

  • Supervises and trains Makerspace student workers and maintains work schedules;
  • Fills weekday daytime gaps in Makerspace and Area 49 Desk coverage;
  • Provides basic library services to users (includes library services such as basic reference, assistance with general library technology like public computing and printing, providing campus information)
  • Independently resolves routine and non-routine problems through standard and creative troubleshooting procedures. Performs routine diagnostics and/or configurations on assigned software and/or hardware according to standard operating procedures.
  • Stays informed on trends and best practices in makerspace technology;
  • Represents the Makerspace at events, such as maker faires and campus creative and informational events;
  • Researches and recommends policies, procedures, and innovative technologies for adoption;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience working in a library or a similar public service point.
  • Experience providing excellent customer service in a library atmosphere.
  • Experience setting up and troubleshooting nontraditional technologies, such as 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC routers, sewing machines, and more.
  • Experience with general computer skills and the ability to troubleshoot computer, copier, scanner, and printer issues.
  • Experience in developing and facilitating trainings and workshops.
  • Experience and knowledge managing makerspace and of makerspace safety standards and best practices.
  • Formal or informal management or supervisory experience.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills as well as the ability to work independently.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong attention to details.
