DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Division of Physical and Biological Sciences offers 21 undergraduate degree programs, 10 masters
programs, and 11 Ph.D. programs. For the 2022-23 academic year, the Division awarded 1,011
undergraduate degrees, 71 masters degrees, and 88 doctoral degrees.

The academic programs of the Division are housed in nine departments. The Division also has two specialized M.S. programs: Science Communication, and Coastal Science and Policy (the latter jointly with the Division of Social Sciences). The Division is home to the campus's Cal-Teach program, which supports the preparation of highly qualified secondary science and math teachers. The Division is home to 10 research units, including the Institute for the Biology of Stem Cells, Center for Molecular Biology of RNA, and Other Worlds Laboratory. Three organized research units (ORUs) are located on the campus: the Institute for Marine Sciences and the Santa Cruz Institute for Particle Physics, which are affiliated with the Division of Physical and Biological Sciences, and the Genomics Institute, which is affiliated with the Baskin School of Engineering, with active members and leaders from the PBSci Division. UC Santa Cruz is the headquarters campus for the University of California Observatories, which manages Lick Observatory. In addition, the PBSci Division manages the UC Santa Cruz campus reserve and six sites, encompassing 8,000+ acres, within the UC Natural Reserve System and Campus Natural Reserve, living laboratories that serve as research and study sites. The Seymour Marine Discovery Center, located on UC Santa Cruz's Coastal Science Campus, a public outreach center for the campus focused on marine and environmental issues, is overseen by the Division. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife maintain laboratories on the Coastal Science Campus, advancing the multidisciplinary and collaborative research in the Division, and the United States Geological Survey has offices near Westside Research Park and the Coastal Science Campus.

Teaching, research, and administrative facilities for the Division are located on three campuses in Santa Cruz: the residential (main) campus, Westside Research Park, and the Coastal Science Campus. The Division maintains approximately 360,000 gsf of research space.

JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Dean of Science, and with support from the program's academic supervisor, the Program Manager will be charged with overseeing the coordination, execution, evaluation, and future planning associated with the donor-funded Degree-Defining Experiences Program. The first year of this program aims to pilot and evaluate experiential field programs and degree-defining experiences that enable undergraduate students to immerse themselves in their respective fields alongside peers, other researchers, graduate students, postdocs, and professors. The goal is to empower students with unforgettable opportunities that will enhance retention, foster enduring campus connections, clarify career aspirations, unveil new pathways, and cultivate resilience for long-term success.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $95,000.00 - $105,000.00/ year. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES

45% - Program Administration

  • Provides general administration for the program.
  • Manages and tracks program budgeting and appropriate dispersal of funds under direction of the dean and the program's academic supervisor and in concert with the divisional accounting team.
  • Assists with hiring and personnel management as designated by the dean and the program's academic supervisor.
  • Implements revised or replacement programming in response to changing circumstances, as needed.
  • Works with academic coordinator to conduct outreach to students, assist with enrollment into programs, and ensure programs are staffed and at capacity.
  • On occasion, may be required to assist in coordinating or leading programs.
  • May be required to drive to the various Natural Reserves that would be unreachable by alternate methods of transportation.

25% - Communication and Marketing

  • Develops a general description of the program and summaries of funded initiatives.
  • Acts as the first point of contact for all inquiries (from students, faculty, the public) about the program.
  • Develops, publishes, and maintains a website, with assistance of a web designer, that provides a public information portal to the program description and specific projects. Website development includes the creation of web content (descriptions, legal photos, hyperlinks to appropriate affiliated websites).
  • Works with the divisional communications team in program outreach and enrollment efforts to ensure students at UC Santa Cruz, California high schools, and community colleges, and the broader community are aware of opportunities and outcomes.
  • Ensures that programs are fully subscribed.
  • Takes photos, videos, and conducts interviews of program leads and students to be used for outreach.

15% - Program Outcomes Tracking and Dissemination

  • Interfaces with and facilitates program evaluation in collaboration with the evaluation team (including appropriate
    IRB permission for program evaluation and project tracking).
  • Develops and maintains a database for tracking program outcomes in collaboration with the evaluation team and under supervision of the program supervisor.
  • Develops and facilitates the distribution of program summary and outcomes information for campus administrators and program funders.

15% - Program Development

  • Pursues outreach to other faculty, departments and discussions about evolving and growing the program.
  • Develops proposals (in collaboration with faculty) for new activities/additions to the program.
  • Develops budgets and operation plans for expansion or extension of the program.
  • Tracks progress for activities currently under development for subsequent years of the program.
  • Produces case studies and profiles to demonstrate early success of the program.
  • Assists University Advancement with preparation of materials (photos, videos, student testimonials) used to seek funding from donors for expansion or extension of the program.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Strong skills in short-term planning.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Solid knowledge of common computer application programs.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including active listening and persuasiveness.

  • Knowledge of a variety of administrative operational activities such as event planning, basic fundraising processes, risk management planning, website design, accounting and payroll, and contracts and grants regulations and guidelines.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.

  • Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.
  • Ability to perform work in a rugged physical environment and inclement weather with challenging infrastructure requirements.

  • The selected candidate will be required to work primarily on campus, with periods of remote work possible based on operational needs.
