The Opportunity

The UCF Department of Philosophy is seeking a 9-month, tenure-earning, assistant professor of Philosophy. The position is expected to begin on August 8, 2025. Position responsibilities include a 3/2 teaching load or its equivalent pre-tenure (a 3/3 teaching load post tenure), and ordinary expectation of research and service assignments. Summer appointment is possible pending budget considerations. The direct reporting supervisory relationship is to Dr. Nancy Stanlick, Chair of the Department of Philosophy.

The Department of Philosophy houses three B.A. programs - Philosophy, Humanities and Cultural Studies, and Religion and Cultural Studies. It also has two graduate certificate programs; one in theoretical and applied ethics and the other in cognitive sciences. In addition, the department contributes to the new undergraduate certificate program in Al and Big Data Ethics. The Department includes undergraduate certificate programs in interfaith dialogue and a minor in cognitive sciences.

The College of Arts and Humanities (CAH) is composed of five departments and two schools. Interdisciplinary collaboration occurs and is encouraged in the Department of Philosophy, in the College of Arts and Humanities, and with other colleges at UCF. CAH also includes the Center for Humanities and Digital Research (CHDR), a very active digital humanities center.

Minimum Qualifications:


  • A Ph.D. in Philosophy or related area from an accredited institution must be conferred no later than July 15th, 2025.

  • Have been the instructor of record for at least two different courses.


Area Of Specialization: Philosophy of Technology and Digital Humanities, with an emphasis on Artificial Intelligence.

Area Of Competence: One or more of: Ethics of Artificial Intelligence; Philosophy of Science (Social or Natural); Engineering Ethics; or related area.

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Peer-reviewed publication experience or research activity in Philosophy of Technology, Digital Humanities, and/or AI.

  • Ability to support and to enhance the department's course offerings related to technology and AI. In particular, the ability to augment CAH's newly developed Undergraduate Certificate in Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, and Human Impacts, and Graduate Certificate in Digital Humanities in the Age of AI.

  • Ability to teach in philosophy and humanities.

  • Ability or experience teaching online and in varied modalities.

  • Demonstrated experience in interdisciplinary research.
