Position Description
Employees in this classification are experienced LVN's responsible for performing a wide variety of patient care activities in an assigned specialty or subspecialty outpatient clinic. Work is performed under the direction of a staff nurse and/or physician as part of a total health care team in providing complete evaluations to patients. Works under the direct supervision of staff nurse or physician. No delegated supervisory authority; may instruct co-workers and supervise them in the performance of special procedures. Work is performed under usual clinic conditions, necessitating a high degree of contact with patients, families and clinic personnel.

Major/Essential Functions
Student Health Services at Texas Tech University is the on-campus medical care clinic exclusively for Texas Tech students. The mission of Student Health Services is to proudly provide compassionate, high-quality and accessible healthcare to Texas Tech students. This primary care clinic is an exciting place to work. It is a fast-paced, team-oriented environment where patients always come first.

The Sr. LVN will support our mission by:
  • Welcoming patients warmly with compassion and enthusiasm.
  • Listening carefully to patient needs presented face to face or over the telephone and communicating clear and accurate information in response to all members of the health care team
  • Implementing teaching plans for patients and their families with well-defined health learning needs.
  • Reporting data, identifies and reports alterations in patient responses to assist in the identification of problems and formulation of goals/ outcomes and patient-centered plans of care in collaboration with patients, their families, and the interdisciplinary health care team.
  • Working collaboratively with other health care team members to ensure patient needs are met and clinic operations are efficient.
  • Communicating with patients via telephone per clinic protocols.
  • Utilizing appropriate protocols to triage walk-in patients and patients who call the clinic requiring assessment.
  • Working under the supervision of a clinician and utilizing Standard Delegation Orders to manage a nurse clinic.
  • Preparing and operating necessary equipment and instruments for examination, treatments and procedures.
  • Assisting with or performs exams and procedures and documents intervention in EMR.
  • Taking and recording accurate vital signs and measurements.
  • Communicating patient data using EMR to support decision-making to improve patient care.
  • Maintaining inventory of supplies in examination and procedure rooms.
  • Participating in the identification of patient needs for referral to resources and facilitate continuity of care.
    Assisting in determining the physical and mental health status, needs, and preferences of culturally, ethnically, and socially diverse patients and their families.
  • Assisting Nursing Team Leader with development and implementation of clinic goals, objectives, to facilitate improved patient outcomes.
  • Managing refill requests and administering medications to patients following policies and procedures for medication management.
  • Completing Annual Nursing Core Competency Training and Skills Fair.
  • Participating in emergency preparedness drills in department.
  • Attending nursing staff meetings.


Required Qualifications
Education: Completion of a Board of Nursing accredited program of vocational nursing.
License/Certification: Current Vocational Nursing license in the state of Texas or the attainment of a temporary permit from the Board of Nursing to practice vocational nursing pending full licensure in the state of Texas.
Experience: At least two years of LVN experience in a hospital, clinic or community-based environment.
