I. Major Responsibilities:

1. Assist Nurse Manager and the Clinical Quality Informatics Project Manager in development of protocol-specific tools to aid in study documentation and quality metrics.
2. Performs concurrent and retrospective medical record review to meet requirements for abstraction put forth by Vermont Oxford Network (VON) and other regulatory requirements.
3. Relays information to clinicians or improvement teams based on data collection/abstraction in order to improve performance.
4. Maintain patient and/or study subject confidentiality.
5. Conduct patient telephone follow up.
6. Track patient enrollment and/or eligibility and completion of abstraction.
7. Communicate with study center for data management and administrative work.
8. Assists in quality improvement initiatives.
9. Assess eligibility of research subjects in accordance with the approved protocol and all applicable regulations including HIPAA.
10. Obtain patient consent and Human Subject Committee approvals for minimal-risk studies as delegated by IRB-approved protocol.
11. Collect, record, evaluate, update, and store/transport pertinent data and samples in relation to protocol.
12. Interprets study results and discusses these interpretations with the principal investigator, formulating tentative hypotheses for unexpected results, and suggests changes in the scientific approach, if indicated.
13. Collaborates with other research assistants as necessary.
14. Prepares and presents data for research meetings.
15. Summarize research findings and prepare presentations.
16. Perform literature searches.
17. Schedule patient tests and/or interviews.
18. Stock, inventory, store, and order samples/supplies as needed to maintain appropriate operations.

II. Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:
Required:
1. Bachelor's degree in a scientific, health care, or related field

Experience/Skills:
Required:
1. Previous experience with medical records clinical abstraction
2. Experience in using computer-based tools (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.) including spreadsheet and database software
3. Excellent oral and written communication skills
4. Excellent organizational skills with proven ability to meet established internal and external deadlines.
5. Ability to work independently.
6. Must be able to exercise sound clinical judgement in the interpretation and documentation of medical and nursing care.
7. Ability to work with all levels of the organization and to actively participate on improvement teams.

Preferred:
1. Understanding of maternal/newborn health terminology.
2. Previous clinical research experience, including undergraduate work.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.

III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:

Work is considered sedentary. Position requires work indoors in a normal lab/office environment.
