Position Description

The Department of One Health Innovation at Texas Tech University invites applications for a full-time, 12-month Research Professor in Research Assistant Professor position to begin July 2026.

The Institute for One Health Innovation (IOHI) jointly established by Texas Tech University (TTU) and TTU Health Sciences center (TTUHSC), seeks an energetic faculty member with demonstrated research excellence in metabolic health with relevant applications of one health approaches, omics and specifically microbiome and metabolomics. The successful applicant will contribute to the university's mission primarily through research by serving as a research faculty member in our new IOHI. This position is specifically assigned for this research faculty to work in the Nutrigenomics, Inflammation & Obesity Research (NIOR) laboratory, directed by Dr. Naima Moustaid-Moussa

About the Department/School/Area

  • IOHI reports to both TTU and TTUHSC Offices of Research & Innovation. Members of IOHI conduct research in cancer, metabolic/cardiometabolic diseases, brain health and neurological diseases, zoonotic and infectious diseases, population and public health research, and come from various TTU and TTUHSC departments, schools and collages https://www.depts.ttu.edu/onehealth/
  • The NIOR Lab in the TTU Nutritional Sciences department house state of the art instrumentation for cell, molecular and animal research including rodent Echo-MRI, metabolic cages, Agilent Seahorse analyzer, PCR instrumentation, fluorescent microscopes, flow cytometer, plate readers, multiplex analyzer, and gel/membrane imagers. https://www.depts.ttu.edu/hs/ns/research/nior/
  • Several Centers and Institutes at TTU and TTUHSC are relevant to One Health research including the Obesity Research Institute (ORI; http://www.depts.ttu.edu/research/obesityresearch/ , which is an interdisciplinary institute that serves as a central collaborative platform for researchers working broadly in obesity-related chronic diseases, with faculty from across the TTU System, primarily from departments and units at TTU, the Texas Tech Health Sciences (TTUHSC_ Schools of Medicine, Nursing and Biomedical Sciences in Lubbock and Permian Basin as well as some faculty from the Diabetes Center at TTUHSC EL Paso. TTUHSC houses several research centers and institutes including the Cancer Center, the Garrison Institute on Aging and the Center of Excellence for Translational Neuroscience and Therapeutics, and the Center for Integrative Health.
  • Texas Tech University houses several core facilities related to basic science research including: (1) the High-Performance Computing Center; (2) the Center for Biotechnology and Genomics (CBG), with state-of-the-art instrumentation for genomics, metabolomics and proteomics research. ; and (3) the College of Arts & Sciences Microscopy Center (CASM) which houses state of the art TEM, SEM, confocal microscope, flow cytometer and cell sorter.

Major/Essential Functions

This is primarily a research lab-based position. Conducting animal (mice) experiments, conducting genomic and microbiome studies; data analyses and manuscript writing , grant writing, and reporting, conducting cell culture studies and biochemical assays, presenting at conferences and assisting the lab PI (Moustaid-Moussa) with; co-mentoring students and lab management and oversight.

At Texas Tech University, the Research Professor title designates an individual appointed, usually full time, to a research position. In line with TTU's strategic priorities to engage and empower a diverse student body, enable innovative research and creative activities, and transform lives and communities through outreach and engaged scholarship, applicants should have experience working with diverse student populations at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels in the area of research.

Faculty Qualifications


  • An earned doctorate such as PhD, in nutrition, biochemistry, biomedical sciences or related disciplines.
  • Experience with animal (rodents) and cell research and ability to develop new research/experimental protocols.
  • Experience and/or publications using omics applications, especially microbiome research
  • Demonstrated ability (commensurate with current position title) to secure extramural research grants and to engage in externally funded collaborative research projects across the college and university.

Preferred Qualifications

In addition to the required qualifications, individuals with the following preferred qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply:

  • Postdoctoral training or equivalent research experience
  • Training in microbiome research.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Research experience in cardiometabolic diseases, breast cancer, or brain health and age-related diseases, epigenetics, omics, metabolism, and/or related areas.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations and first-generation students is highly desirable.
  • Evidence for training/mentoring students.
  • Experience with grant writing and/or competitive extramural research funding.
  • Ability to interact successfully and work harmoniously with colleagues and students in a diverse community as evidenced by audience composition in presentations and coauthored in publications and collaborations.
