Selective is seeking an AVP of Risk Managment to manage the entire Safety Management operations in the West region. Support Corporate and Regional business goals by building and strengthening business partnerships with Regional leadership and peers, achieve Safety Management objectives by implementing and executing Department and Regional level Safety Management goals, direct talent acquisition and development of staffing, lead the Safety Management Quality Assurance program within the region, and execute budgetary goals.

Essential Functions:



  • Manage regional Safety Management (SM) operations and develop strategy to achieve Corporate Safety Management Department and Regional objectives. Actively monitor and interpret regional results and adjust strategy to ensure successful completion of goals as needed. Mentor and inspire regional Safety Management Supervisors and staff in supporting Department and Regional strategies.
  • Collaborate with region's Field Operations Manager and Underwriting Manager to support regional goals and objectives and identify SM strategies that support the acquisition of new and retention of renewal business. Partner with regional Claim representatives to improve effectiveness of risk reduction methods, identify emerging issues and leverage known claim leading indicators.
  • Accountable for the SM Quality Assurance program's functions and activities within the region. Support the development of regional and individual risk assessment and service skills through the use of the Quality Assurance program's results to develop action plans that are designed to continuously improve those skills.
  • Actively engage Agents and other external partners in informing and advising of SM staff's capabilities and strategic advantages in obtaining profitable business.
  • Prepare operating budget for region. Monitor and control the department's budget and expenses. Mentor SM Team Leaders in budget and business activities.
  • Lead talent acquisition and development of new and current staff, including succession planning for leadership and technical roles. Administer the performance appraisal process for any direct reports as well as serve as a mentor to SM Team Leaders in the
  • Maintain a high level of knowledge of risk management techniques and technology. Earn and maintain designations through self-education and training programs. This includes the application of nationally recognized codes and standards as well as appropriate state regulations in reducing the level of risk for customers. Independently seek opportunities to increase leadership, strategy, and management capabilities by utilizing internal and external resources.

Qualifications:



  • Ability to travel and meet with customers and agents to assess and maintain risk.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with customers and agents and encourage the implementation of risk management strategies to reduce the level of risk and the potential for loss.
  • Must be able to build effective business partnerships with internal team members and agents.
  • Must have valid state-issued driver's license in good standing and be able to drive an automobile.
  • Demonstrate a proficiency in usage of computer tools including: Internet research applications, Microsoft Office, work management system, eSelect tools, Cognosreports, etc.
  • A college degree is preferred.
  • Proficiency in assessing and managing risk in all major commercial lines of business developed through 7+ years of significant
  • field based experience plus 5+ years of supervisory experience.
  • Able to understand and explain coverage exposures, controls and appropriate risk management techniques. Strong problem
  • solving abilities in strategic, operational, and business related issues.
  • Competent ability to apply OSHA, NFPA and other applicable technical standards.
  • Demonstrate strong leadership skills or traits and the ability to communicate with all levels of reporting structure.


Salary range: $149,000 - $225,000. The actual base salary is based on geographic location, and the range is representative of salaries for this role throughout Selective's footprint. Additional considerations include the candidate's qualifications and experience.
