Position Overview:

The Automation Specialist position is a member of the SYD Intelligent Devices Team or the Software and Controls Team and is a primary technical owner of assigned Industrial Automation product categories including Rockwell Automation. This team member will work cooperatively with the supporting sales team on strategic planning and leveraging emerging technologies to grow our customer base and resulting sales revenue. This unique role takes on many different forms throughout the entire life cycle of the automation solutions provided to customers.

Competencies, skills, and abilities:



  • Experience in engineering, design, and/or integration of Industrial Automation and Control technologies including Motor Control, Machine Safety, Visualization, PLCs, Motion Control, Robotics, Process Control, and distributed I/O platforms.
  • Ability to interpret and apply technical specifications, electrical schematics, and PLC programs.
  • Strong Industrial Automation troubleshooting skills and ability to consult customers on options for resolution.
  • Demonstrates technical and business acumen with a focus on the correlation of outcomes and solutions to sales
  • Strong communication skills including presenting, training, and corresponding with all levels of manufacturing personnel.
  • Ability to collaborate with sales teams, technical teams, and vendor representatives
  • Ability to negotiate effectively at a high level and build strong relationships with customers and vendors
  • Excellent customer service skills and a strong customer focus
  • Strong entrepreneurial mindset


Essential Functions:



  • Continuous growth in knowledge of the Industrial Automation market and industry trends, competitors, and leading customer strategies
  • Demonstrate proven ability to develop and maintain strong supplier and customer relationships
  • Works directly with customers on technical and commercial pre/post-sales engagements
  • Monitor customer profitability within the Automation market with the use of Business Intelligence tools
  • Support pricing strategies with technical and relationship knowledge that drive business growth
  • Utilize reporting and business metrics to draw insights and strategies around focus areas of business & technology
  • Assist in the development of annual goals and annual sales objectives
  • Explore and determine new services and solutions to better serve the Industrial Automation market
  • Collaborate with others and strategize on resource allocation and vendor alignment across all territories/branches, as needed
  • Communicate, through various means, with all levels of leadership and technical audiences
  • Other duties as assigned


Work Environment:

This job operates primarily in an office-type setting with the balance of the time split between visiting customer sites, and branches, and attending meetings. This position requires the use of standard office equipment such as computers, internet, smartphones, and photocopiers. The Automation Specialist will occasionally be required to visit projects on various sites. When at job sites you may be exposed to varying environmental conditions depending on the location or type of job site and associated weather.

Clearances and Certifications:



  • Various clearances may be required. U.S. Citizenship or U.S. Permanent Resident status is required.


Education and Experience:



  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or equivalent experience required
  • Experience with automation equipment and technologies required
  • Understanding of cloud-based solutions preferred
  • Previous sales and leadership experience preferred
  • Industrial market knowledge is preferred
