Facilities Ground Worker I

Milwaukee County Facilities Management

Pay Range: $19.88 - $29.83

We operate facilities that operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, weekends, and holidays.

Candidates must be available to work 1st,2nd, 3rd, weekends, and holidays.

Job Summary: Under the general direction of the Facilities Ground Supervisor, this position performs general tasks in Facilities buildings. Its major objective is to provide a basic level of experience in the operations area of maintaining buildings and grounds. Entry level position with limited mechanical, building and grounds experience. Employee must have availability to workdays, evenings, nights, weekends, overtime, shift rotations and holiday as needed.

Essential Responsibilities:



  • Performs corrective maintenance requested by tenants or facilities staff. Maintenance tasks are usually general in nature and may include light bulb replacements, opening/closing the facilities, monitoring facilities, or performing work outside normal building hours.
  • Carry out work schedules and maintenance tasks and programs, assist in repairs and preventative/routine maintenance needs throughout the buildings and grounds.
  • Provide general building support for moves, quality assurance, and coordination of facilities related tenant request and support. Support events and other facilities tasks as assigned by the Supervisor.
  • Mowing and trimming grass with large riding equipment, maintain storm water ponds, tree removal and trimming, heavy equipment/loader operation.
  • Assist skilled Trades in the performance of their duties by performing a variety of tasks for care and maintenance of buildings and grounds. May work under direction of or one-on-one with Trades to assist in service and maintenance coverage.
  • Perform snow and salting operations, regular and emergency, walkways/sidewalks, parking lots and roadways.
  • Other related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications Required:



  • Current resident of the State of Wisconsin.
  • HS Diploma/GED equivalent.
  • A valid state of Wisconsin driver's license at time of hire and maintained throughout employment.
  • At least six (6) MONTHS of grounds and maintenance related work experience.
  • The ability to lift/carry up to 50lbs and push/pull up to 150lbs on a regular basis.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office software, specifically Word and Excel.
  • Basic knowledge of the work order system.
  • Must successfully undergo a criminal history background check to maintain security clearance for Milwaukee County facilities.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Experience in snowplow operation is desirable.
  • Class B commercial driver's license with airbrake endorsement is preferred.



NOTE: Passing of required training set forth by Facilities Management is required within six-month probationary period.

Additional Experience and Abilities: Experience with operating machinery and vehicles such as: mowers/rider, front loader, lifts and compactors preferred; experience with power tools, ladder, scaffolding, PC's, chainsaws and chippers is desirable; ability to communicate information effectively with internal and/or external contacts; ability to read, write, and comprehend simple instructions; ability to execute decisions within limits of standard policy and procedures.
