Primary Purpose of Position |
Screens, prepares, and processes provider medication orders under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist. Provide clerical support to the medical records and front desk areas of the clinic as required. This position receives the medication order, reviews the patient medication profile, enters required information into a data information system, prepares a prescription label, selects the appropriate drug, counts out the prescribed number of medication dosage units, and proofs for errors. |
Minimum Education/Experience |
Required Minimum Qualifications:
Completion of an accredited nine-month Pharmacy Technician program; or high school diploma or equivalency and one year of pharmacy-related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
University Preferred Qualifications:
Completion of a nine-month Pharmacy Technician program or graduation from high school and two years of pharmacy-related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. |
Essential Job Duties |
- Screening and preparing provider medication orders.
- Recording data and maintaining accurate patient profiles.
- Preparing and dispensing medications.
- Excellent customer service and problem resolution skills.
- Maintaining drug inventory. Support medical records, front desk, immunizations, medical clinic and other relevant staff.
- Ability to understand, communicate, and follow oral and written instructions.
- Embrace change with the role of a pharmacy technician in both the pharmaceutical industry and Student Health.

Other Work Responsibilities |
Demonstrates basic knowledge of medical and pharmacy terminology and processing techniques. Demonstrates basic knowledge of pharmaceutical drugs, calculations and formulas. Demonstrates basic knowledge of chemical procedures used to compound, reconstitute and dilute drugs. Working knowledge of federal and state laws, rules and regulations regarding pharmacy services.
Job duties will include: Performing routine processes such as labeling and inventory maintenance. Processing of prescriptions will be performed with use of an electronic health record (
EHR) and QS/1 or other pharmacy software. This position will also be responsible for assisting with maintaining the pharmacy inventory. This position will require maintaining all necessary continuing education requirements/credits for national certification.
- Communication and Instruction
Provides basic instruction to patients/clients on how to administer and/or store medications. Refers patient/client to pharmacist for any technical or detailed information. Provides positive and effective customer service by listening to the patient/client and understanding and responding to identified needs. Follows medication orders and written instructions. Labels and prepares written information following procedures.
Job duties will include: Employee will have daily contact with the pharmacist, vendors, patients, health care providers, nursing staff, and other staff members. The position would also have contact with delivery personnel as well as telephone contact with patients. The patient contact would involve answering basic questions regarding medication concerns, prescription insurance, pharmaceutical history, prescription refills, prescription transfers, and assuring that the patient receives pharmacist counseling when required.
Fills medication orders following established procedures. Assist with processing and resolving insurance claims. Prepares pharmaceutical products and prescriptions. Collects fees or payments. Makes accurate observations concerning drug qualities, quantities and accuracy of label. Understands and complies with the quality control procedures of the pharmacy and Student Heath. Enters basic data in data management system. Maintains accurate patient database. Prepares statistical reports. Maintains appropriate inventory of regular medications and/or controlled substances.
Job duties will include: Prioritizing tasks and keeping current on all records and forms is an important function of this position. |

Necessary Licenses or Certifications |
Must be at least 18 years of age. High school graduate or
GED required. Must be licensed by the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy. Required certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (CPhT). Prior Retail Pharmacy Technician experience is required. |
