Job Summary

The Chief of Staff will represent the Center and engage in problem-solving and relationship-building. They will also be a principal author/reviewer on internal policies, procedures, and internal/external communications. As a key strategist with the Director, the Chief of Staff will initiate and develop new direction for the Center, long- and short-range planning, and innovative initiatives. This position will also independently manage and administer independent programs/policies with organization-wide impact. The Chief of Staff will manage the Center's staff who run the organization's research administration, human resources, operations, and budgetary planning. This position will require advanced critical thinking and analysis of complex problems relating to seeking funding, project management, and relationships with internal and external stakeholders to the University.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Bachelor's degree in related areas (e.g., Public Health, Public Policy) or equivalent years of experience in administrative management in higher education.
  • A minimum of five years' experience in administrative resource management with an emphasis on communication, budget and finance, administration, technology, and organizational problem-solving.
  • A minimum of three years of experience recruiting, supervising, and managing professional staff, including performance, training and development, team building, coaching, communications, and conict resolution.
  • Demonstrated experience in promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, preferably within a higher education setting.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of higher education organizations, operations, and policy issues.
  • Advanced skills in short- and long-range planning and program and project management to plan, oversee, and implement strategic initiatives and support budget management.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills to communicate clearly and professionally to develop and sustain collegial working relationships.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree preferred, such as a Master's in Public Health or Public Policy.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a complex workforce environment, including working with academics, professional staff, represented employees, and student workers.
  • Experience identifying and fostering new funding opportunities, directing activities that take advantage of them, and overseeing the successful discharge of their goals when funded.
  • Knowledge of common organization-specific and other computer application programs.
  • Financial analysis and reporting techniques.
  • Sound strategic thinking and consulting skills to guide the organization toward workable strategies and solutions.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of UC Davis campus policies and regulations.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of relevant State and Federal policies and regulations.

Department Overview

The Center for Healthcare Policy and Research is an organized research unit at UC Davis, overseen by the Office of Research and supported by the School of Medicine Dean's office. Our interdisciplinary mission is to facilitate research, promote education, and inform policy related to health and healthcare. Currently, the Center provides funding for 40 staff members who support over 100 faculty affiliates across a broad range of research contracts and grants at the federal, state, and local levels.

Work Environment

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. Smoking, the use of smokeless tobacco products, and the use of unregulated nicotine products (e-cigarettes) will be strictly prohibited on any UC Davis owned or leased property, indoors and outdoors, including parking lots and residential space.

This position is eligible for a hybrid flexible work arrangement with a maximum of two remote days per week. Work occasional evenings/weekends. Provide own transportation to UC Davis and/or off-site meetings and events.
