ABOUT THE JOB

To provide spiritual support to patients, family and staff; facilitate arrangements as needed to enable patients to practice their spiritual beliefs while hospitalized; act as liaison with community clergy of all faith groups.

DETAILED JOB DESCRIPTION

Respond to referrals of admitted patients/families, assess the spiritual needs of patients/families and provide pastoral care and counseling accordingly. Provide crisis intervention services to patients/families in all health care system facilities as requested.

Function as a cohesive member of the pastoral care team, providing pastoral care services for patients of other chaplains as needed. Work collaboratively with medical treatment teams. Serve as On Call Chaplain for medical and spiritual emergencies.

Act as liaison between hospital staff, patients/family/friends of the patient during periods of crisis, such as critical illness.

Contact the patient's faith leader at patient's request. Coordinate pastoral care activities with other health care disciplines to avoid interrupting medical care and to ensure spiritual support for the patient.

Perform religious rites or arrange for appropriate religious leader to do so, as requested by patient/family. Provide interdenominational worship services as needed and schedule chapel functions including visiting clergy.

Document pastoral care services provided in the electronic medical record as defined in department policies.

Serve on interdisciplinary committees, attend patient conferences as requested.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

A master's degree in Divinity, Theology or a related field from an accredited institution of higher learning.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Four units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) from a recognized CPE program.

Board Certification (BCC) by an appropriate professional association within two years of employment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met with or without reasonable accommodation. The performance of these physical demands is an essential function of the job. This position is very active and may require ambulating, remaining in a stationary position and positioning self to reach and/or move objects above the shoulders and below the knees. The employee may frequently lift and/or move objects up to 10 lbs and occasionally move objects up to 25 lbs.

This role may also routinely comes into contact with patients who may have contagious illnesses. This position is in a health care facility open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Rotating shifts as well as holiday and work during inclement weather will be required.
