Job Summary

The Loudoun County Department of Health seeks a highly motivated and skilled individual to join our dynamic team as an Environmental Health Specialist within the Rabies Program. At the Loudoun Health Department, our mission is to lead the way in creating a community focused on health and wellness, and we're looking for someone who shares our passion and dedication.

As an Environmental Health Specialist, you will play a pivotal role within the Rabies Program, operating under general supervision and serve on a team of highly skilled environmental health professionals. Responsibilities will encompass a range of program areas, including but not limited to providing rabies disease control services to a diverse population.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Animal Bite Report investigations to comply with local and state codes.
  • Provide public education for rabies disease control and prevention.
  • Perform routine investigations of animal bites, including confinement and release of animals.
  • Prepare animal specimens for sampling and provide follow-up of cases.
  • Perform other routine environmental investigations, including being on a rotating on-call schedule.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Hiring salary is commensurate with experience.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Public Health, Environmental Health, Biology, Chemistry, or a related field; two (2) years of related work experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.


Job Contingencies and Special Requirements

Valid driver's license and good driving record (driving records may be reviewed annually for continued qualification); additional license if required by law for position or assigned department.
Pass pre-employment criminal background check, fingerprint, and DMV checks.
Special Requirements:

  • Subject to recall/rotational on-call 24-hours a day, seven days a week as assigned.
  • May be required to work during public health/County emergencies 24/7; and if so, may be assigned to a different location or asked to serve in a different capacity.
  • May be required to work in an outdoor environment during varying types of weather (hot or cold).
  • Must obtain and maintain active rabies vaccination status (pre-exposure series) when required for job-related duties.
