JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Dennis Lab at the Penn State College of Medicine, in Hershey, PA, is recruiting a Research Technologist (senior professional) is to assist the Principal Investigator with designing and conducting experiments to the further research goals of the laboratory. This position is responsible for maintaining lab equipment, tracking inventory, ordering supplies, and ensuring safety compliance measures so the lab operates smoothly. Additionally, this position handles breeding and maintaining mouse colonies. This position will be expected to develop, design, and submit protocols to ensure the proper care and use of laboratory animals.

The selected individual will be expected to assist in developing, designing and conducting parts of research projects. The individual will participate in formulating research methods and identifying and solving problems. They will also coordinate data collection and analysis as well as interpret and present results. The selected individual will also be expected to train users in equipment operation and research techniques, as well as explain and demonstrate technology and equipment capabilities. The individual will also be an author/co-author on papers, proposals, presentations and reports.

These responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Design and perform bench-based duties including nucleic acid extractions, PCR, reverse transcription and qRT-PCR, plasmid prep and purification, preparation of buffers and solutions, protein assays and western blot, and any other molecular biology techniques required to further our research. Provide training in these techniques to graduate students and other laboratory personnel.
  • Manage laboratory by maintaining reagent inventory levels, ordering supplies and turning in the necessary support forms, obtaining quotes and communicating with vendors, ensuring lab stays within safety guidelines and regulations, maintaining lab equipment and arranging service when necessary, keeping lab clean and organized. Maintain updated catalogs of tissue samples, cell culture stocks, PCR primers.
  • Manage and oversee the well-being of cell models used in research, amplify and freeze down various cell types to ensure future availability, conduct cell-based experiments which involve treatments with various compounds to analyze their effects on proteins of interest.
  • Keep detailed records of day-to-day experiments, protocols followed, and organize data generated from these experiments. Assist with accurate descriptions of research protocols during the preparation of manuscripts.
  • Develop, design, and submit protocols to ensure the proper care and use of laboratory animals.

Minimum Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • 6+ years of relevant experience
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience

This is a limited-term position funded for one year from date of hire, withpossibility of refunding.

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$51,000.00 - $74,000.00
