Geotechnical Staff Engineer

RK&K is seeking a motivated, hard-working entry level Geotechnical Engineer for the Baltimore, Maryland office to assist on a wide range of challenging highway, heavy rail, light rail, bus rapid transit, and environmental projects including highway and rail bridges, buildings, retaining walls, slopes, pavements, ground treatment of soft soils and subgrades, and pipelines. Basic Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of the Geotechnical Engineer is to assist with developing an understanding of and characterizing subsurface conditions for transportation and environmental projects. You will have the opportunity to work across civil engineering disciplines to collaborate to prepare calculations, plans, and reports related to a variety of geotechnical projects for a variety of clients in the transportation and municipal sectors; you will supervise field investigations; develop design computations; and prepare geotechnical recommendations, contract plans, specifications, and construction cost estimates. This work includes:



  • site characterization though field reconnaissance and mapping of geological and geotechnical features as they affect existing and proposed engineered features;
  • perform surveillance of drilling operations, including logging and classifying soil and rock materials in accordance with applicable logging standards;
  • familiarity with database development;
  • create drilling logs and geological cross sections, profiles, and maps necessary to convey the subsurface exploration results;
  • perform selected analyses of engineering performance studies (with supervision);
  • write technical letters, technical memoranda, and briefs of findings;
  • assist engineering staff with preparation of geotechnical engineering reports and proposals;
  • perform calculations for slope stability, bearing resistance, and settlements of shallow and deep foundations and retaining walls;
  • perform calculations for pavement design;
  • maintain gINT database and integrate with GIS and other web-based geo-locating systems.


Qualifications



  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, MS Degree preferred
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) preferred or within 1 year
  • 0 to 2 years of practical geotechnical engineering experience
  • Experience with gINT, GIS or other geo-based database management system preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Willingness to travel on temporary assignments as needed
  • Must have a valid driver's license and ability to perform fieldwork on active construction sites year-round without restrictions, and in inclement weather if required

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, mobile devices, and printers. May lift or move soil and rock samples, banker boxes, paper, books, and office equipment up to twenty-five pounds.

Salary Range: $35/hr. - $40/hr.
