Job Announcement

Performs the repairs, installation, alteration and maintenance of electrical systems and equipment and all other related work on all FCPA facilities. Manages and participates in the operation and maintenance of the agency's electrical equipment to include lighting systems on the athletic fields, tennis courts and multi-use courts. Develops and implements site specific preventative maintenance programs in accordance with agency standards. Coordinates all contracted electrical repairs with contractors, prepares purchase requests and uses p-cards as necessary for repairs. Supervises and inspects the electrical work of contractors performing repairs to agency electrical systems. Maintains workflow in the automated work order system for assigned tasks.

Reports to 4030 Hummer Road, Annandale, VA daily and then travels throughout Fairfax County to various Park Authority sites for work.

Daily work hours are 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Evening, weekend and holiday work may be required to handle emergencies. This will require driving to countywide locations in a county vehicle on a daily basis.


Illustrative Duties

  • Performs preventive maintenance and repairs to main switchboards, panel boards, etc. with voltage up to 600 volts ac and main bus amperages up to 6000 while maintaining the integrity of the three phase system;
  • Troubleshoots most complex electrical problems;
  • Installs circuits for power, lighting and equipment using various wiring methods (i.e. rigid metal conduits, armored cables, etc.);
  • Troubleshoots/repairs main and branch circuit breakers, etc.;
  • Installs and disconnects wiring devices such as switches, convenience receptacles and dedicated receptacles;
  • Diagnoses and troubleshoots live electrical circuits where a blue print or schematic may not be available;
  • Diagnoses problems and repairs/replaces failed lighting systems and controls as well as electromagnetic and electronic ballast's on lighting equipment;
  • Operates assigned service vehicle, maintains inventory of spare parts and initiates procurement of replacement supplies and equipment as necessary;
  • Makes cost and material estimates;
  • Collects data for preventive maintenance system and maintains activity logs;
  • Responds to routine and emergency service calls after normal working hours;
  • Follows and enforces safety regulations and procedures;
  • May serve as a team leader to Electrician I's and/or Maintenance Trade Helpers providing guidance/direction and instruction, appraising performance, serving on selection panels and inspecting/approving the work performed by team members.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of the standards, practices and equipment of the electrical trade;
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable county, state and national electrical, NFPA and safety codes;
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and procedures as well as common hazards associated with working with electricity;
  • Ability to plan and perform work of the trade at the journeyman-level;
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions as well as diagrams, schematics, blue prints and manufacturer's manuals;
  • Ability to estimate time and material needs;
  • Ability to use, where applicable, hand held computers;
  • Ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships;
  • Ability to train/instruct and provide guidance/direction to Electrician I's and Maintenance Trade Helpers;
  • Ability to perform duties in inclement weather, climb ladders and scaffolds and routinely work in dark, hot, cold or damp working environments in tiring, physically demanding positions for long periods of time.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or GED issued by a state department of education; plus, two-year electrical technical degree; or completion of a apprentice-level electrical vocational training program; plus, three years of progressively responsible experience as a journeyman electrician.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of the equipment, standards, and practices of the electrical trade. Knowledge of applicable county, state and national electrical, NFPA (NEC) and safety codes. Knowledge of safety regulations and procedures. Knowledge of common hazards associated with working with electricity. Ability to plan and perform work of the trade at the journeyman-level.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

  • Driver's License (Required)
  • Journeyman (Electrical) from the State of Virginia (Required)
  • Two-year electrical technical degree or completion of an apprentice-level electrical vocational training program.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to lift 25-50 pounds occasionally. Ability to stoop occasionally. All duties may be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
