The Position

This position is within the East Bay Municipal Utility District's (EBMUD's) Maintenance Machinist class series. The Machining and Maintenance Worker II is distinguished by assisting higher-level workers in completing a wide variety of repair work requiring the use of many stationary and portable machine tools, limited knowledge and understanding of the operation and maintenance of pumps, valves, and motors. Assignments at this level involve minor corrective and preventive maintenance as well as general repair of water distribution plant facilities.

Typical duties include:

* Observing, learning to perform, and assisting Maintenance Machinists in a variety of basic mechanical inspection, preventive maintenance and repair of pumps, valves, electric motors and related mechanical equipment including pump alignments and in-shop balancing; assisting in performing millwright-type work in the field.

* Observing, learning to perform, and assisting in sheet metal work, fabricating and pop riveting; learning basic oxyacetylene, MIG, ARC and TIG welding techniques.

* Observing, learning to perform, and assisting in the disassembly, cleaning, lubrication and reassembly of hydraulic and pneumatic valves and regulators.

* Assisting in preparing work site for service and ensures that materials and tools are clean and properly located on the job or in the shop area in preparation for scheduled repair work; helping keep the shop area generally clean and orderly; cleaning up work area after job is completed.

* Learning to set up, where necessary, and to use a variety of hand and power tools, gauges and measuring and testing instruments common to the mechanical maintenance trades such as cutting torches, impact wrenches, band saws, pipe threading machines, taps and dies, drill presses, grinders, lathes, milling machines, scales, micrometers, dial indicators and Vernier calipers.

* Learning and applying proper shop and field safety practices and procedures; completing the EBMUD Safety Academy and other assigned courses.

* Learning to interpret and work from mechanical drawings, designs and sketches.

* Keeping simple shop or field records; making oral or written reports of supplies, material, or equipment used and of work performed; may obtain parts and materials from vendors.

The salary range is $7,937 per month increasing to $8,334, $8,751, and $9,189 after 12, 24, and 36 months, respectively.

Requirements

1. A high school diploma, or its equivalent, AND

2. Twelve months of experience equivalent to the EBMUD's Machining and Maintenance Worker I classification*.

EBMUD candidates must have achieved satisfactory completion of the OJT, vocational school, and self-study courses specified in the EBMUD Maintenance Trades Training Program for Maintenance Machinists, and upon supervisory certification of proficiency.

Incumbents must advance to the Machining and Maintenance Worker III position within 18 months of appointment.

*Completion of an accredited community college or comparable certificate program in machine tool technology or closely related field, acceptable to EBMUD may be substituted for the required 12 months of experience.

The Selection Process

1. Submit a completed EBMUD application and the required supplemental question responses online at www.ebmud.com by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, February 14, 2025. Only application materials submitted online during the filing period will be accepted.

2. Candidates must achieve a passing score on each test part in order to advance to the next step in the selection process.

3. All qualified applications and supplemental responses will be competitively evaluated, with those candidates demonstrating the strongest qualifications for the position to be invited to the Written Test tentatively scheduled for the weekend of March 15, 2025. The written test will cover job-related subject areas including Pumps, Welding, Piping Systems, Hand Tools, Safety and Health, and Math.

4. Candidates who pass the written test will be invited to the Performance Test. The performance test is tentatively scheduled for early April 2025. The performance test is a hands-on shop test that covers work on a lathe, mill, grinder, welding, alignment, and other shop related tasks.

5. The probation period for this position is 12 months. For those holding civil service status the probation period is 6 months.

6. All employment offers are conditional, pending the results of a Live Scan background screening. All selected finalists must participate in the Live Scan background screening process to remain in consideration for EBMUD employment.
