The Custom Body Design Department is seeking a full-time Design Engineer to play a key role in designing and producing high-quality, custom truck bodies. This position involves creating detailed 3D models, 2D shop drawings, and bills of materials (BOMs) to support production and vendor processes. The ideal candidate will possess strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail, ensuring custom sheet metal bodies meet customer specifications and contribute to overall production efficiency and customer satisfaction.

What you'll do

  • Designing custom sheet metal bodies to house Terex units and other equipment on truck platforms.

  • Developing 3D models in SolidWorks based on customer quotes, specific design requirements, and safety standards.

  • Creating detailed 2D shop drawings that include all necessary dimensions, materials, and assembly instructions for production.

  • Generating bills of materials (BOMs) to ensure all necessary components are available for production.

  • Reviewing and managing outsourced body designs for accuracy and adherence to specifications.

  • Collaborating with cross functional teams to resolve ambiguities and ensure customer design approval.

  • Updating drawings, BOMs, and other build documentation with customer changes and "as-built" changes that may occur during the build process.

  • Applying engineering fundamentals to develop new custom body designs or enhance existing designs.

  • Working with vendors to confirm that purchased parts meet required specifications and standards.

  • Completing and signing off on engineering documentation, including Engineering Change Notices (ECNs).

  • Participating in design reviews to identify improvements and ensure compliance with manufacturing standards.

  • Supporting production teams by addressing design-related issues and offering solutions.

  • Performing additional duties as required.

What you'll bring

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, or a related field

  • Proficiency in 3D design software (SolidWorks preferred)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Extensive knowledge of custom sheet metal design and manufacturing processes

  • Strong understanding of welding processes and their application to sheet metal fabrication

  • Ability to read and create blueprints and technical documents

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail

  • Ability to independently develop innovative solutions and drive continuous improvement in designs

  • Understanding of lean principles and how they apply to custom manufacturing

  • Understand of lifting and rigging design as it pertains to large weldments

  • Basic understanding of bolted joint design

  • Basic understanding of static & dynamic load case calculations

  • Knowledge of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for structural design and stress analysis

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools and strong technical writing skills

  • Experience with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems and Material Requirements Planning (MRP) software

  • Internship or professional experience in a related field is a plus

  • Ability to lift up to 10 pounds occasionally and frequently lift smaller items (1-2 pounds)

Salary: The compensation range for this position is $68,000 - $84,000 annually/salary. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc.
