Position Overview

The UAS Level 2 Pilot role serves as an introduction to operation of UAS equipment, flight operations, and the typical responsibilities of a UAS pilot. In addition, it is also an introduction for survey instruments and data collection equipment to measure precise distance (including total stations, levels, GPS receivers and other company provided equipment). Employees in this role will be visual observers of project missions until they have completed McAdams Flight Training.

Key Responsibilities



  • Gain and maintain strong understanding of the various disciplines of construction staking / surveying needed to accurately and effectively perform required project tasks
  • Ensure the UAS Standard Operating Procedures are followed during all UAS operations
  • Plan and schedule UAS missions while understanding the importance of weather, wind, and solar activity and how they impact UAS operations
  • Prepare flight plans for any type of missions across multiple flight applications
  • Ensure field crew daily tasks are performed accurately and efficiently through the various project stages
  • Follow guidelines and McAdams company standards set forth in the Construction Staking Handbook
  • Operate all UAS equipment for LIDAR, Photogrammetric, and Videographic missions
  • Read and interpret construction plans, storm drainage, sewer tables, check pipe slopes and grades, contour interpolation, straight grading, and compute vertical curves for profile grade checks.
  • Identify potential plan, computation, and constructability issues
  • Perform Boundary, Topographic, ALTA and other various types of surveys with limited or no supervision
  • Demonstrate the vision to plan a project to be performed in the most efficient and accurate way possible and seeing the big picture for project execution
  • Manage crew members in a manner that all company and vendor safety requirements are being met; identify potential hazards and inform crew on proper PPE and mitigation of hazards
  • Provide clear and concise direction to fellow crew members and ensure crew members perform daily tasks
  • Interact with clients in a professional manner; demonstrate an ability to defuse contentious situations that may arise from interaction with client or project neighbors
  • Ensure that truck and equipment is being kept organized, clean, and regular maintenance and safety checks are being performed
  • Ensure that replacement requests for equipment are submitted such that equipment supply is maintained and operational
  • Mentor and train junior crew members
  • Prepare proper filed notes and manage field data files in a manner that they can be easily interpreted and cyphered by office support staff; submit notes and field files daily. Maintain individual flight logs and equipment flight logs for equipment utilized during the mission. Assist in the maintenance of the Standard Operating Procedure manual. Documents "Lessons Learned" during flight missions.
  • Maintain good client relations to foster and perpetuate a long-term relationship
  • Maintains professional image through proper conduct and presentable appearance
  • Follows guidelines and company standards set forth for the Geomatics department
  • Aids in maintaining a safe and respectful work environment by following company policies and procedures
  • Responsible for escalating potential hazards and unsafe working conditions
  • Represent McAdams in the field with professionalism through proper conduct and presentable appearance


Skills + Experience



  • High school diploma or GED
  • Possess core competencies of Crew Chief Level 1 and have 3 or more years of experience in a Land Surveying related field
  • Possess core competencies of UAS Pilot Level 1 responsibilities and have at least 2 years' experience as a UAS Pilot
  • Must have a valid driver's license
  • Successfully pass a motor vehicle records check, drug test, and functional assessment
  • Certified FAA sUAS Remote Pilot
  • Minimum Flight Hours: 300 hours
