Job Summary

Provides day-to-day consultation, training, instruction, troubleshooting and problem-solving to computer users for hardware, software, network, related computer systems and peripheral devices. Ensures the effective operation of all systems; installs and configures systems; recommends hardware and software acquisitions and upgrades. Provides support for Biology department users of Active Directory, Microsoft Office Suite, SharePoint, and other system resources.

  • Provides technical support services to classrooms, instructional computer labs and users of multiple computer systems throughout the Biology department.
  • Performs initial configuration and maintenance of system hardware and software to meet the college's standards. Diagnoses system hardware and software operation problems and applies corrective procedures to restore them to operational standards.
  • Works with the University's chosen IT ticketing system to create, track, manage, and report on requests and incidents.
  • Researches computer hardware options and software applications and reviews with Assistant IT Director-CASTIC and department chair for decision on departmental adoption.
  • Distributes new computers within the department(s) and provides initial training in their operation to users.
  • Creates, tests, and deploys computer hard drive images with related software.
  • Provides support to the college department by identifying, prioritizing, troubleshooting and resolving issues on hardware and software received by telephone, email, or the designated ticketing system.
  • Coordinates with department faculty/staff and FIU Media Technology Services and/or outside vendors in integration of technology with instruction in both lecture and laboratory component courses for online or in-class courses, including instructional lab computer setup & support and online training server/user support.
  • Coordinates purchasing and bidding for technology needs and projects for the Biology department including obtaining and following up on computer quotes and consultations as instructed by supervisor.
  • Collaborates with security staff members on system security updates. Conducts field visits to faculty offices.
  • Services computers and peripherals used by faculty for online and by hybrid courses
  • Performs essential duties in any emergencies such as hurricanes, storms, and/or any other university emergency closing. The employee is expected to be available to report to work as needed during university emergency closing with appropriate notification of a department administrator.
  • Works with FIU-based and external vendors to ensure software licenses are up to date for end users
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related technology field and two (2) years of experience in the field; OR six (6) years of related experience; OR an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.

Desired Qualifications

  • Must be able to lift heavy items.
  • Experience with Active Directory.
