Basic Function

Responsible for welding, constructing, assembling, installing, maintaining, and repairing piping systems, equipment, and components in refinery and industrial settings. Duties include reading plans, fabricating, and installing piping (carbon steel, stainless steel, chrome, etc.), and using hand/power tools, welding, flame-cutting, soldering, and brazing equipment. Pipe Welders also test and maintain systems that carry chemicals, acids, and gases while ensuring quality and safety standards.

Job Duties

(functions considered essential as defined by ADA)



  • Installation, troubleshooting, repair and replacement of,but not limited to the following equipment and systems:
  • Installs pipes and fixtures.
  • Repairs installation and extension of pipes and structural components using various welding techniques.
  • Performs pipe fitting responsibilities and welds pipes that carry oil and gas products to, from, and within a refinery.
  • Works with rigging equipment and rig for crane lifts, uses proper crane signals.
  • Troubleshoots systems that are not working.
  • Performs LDAR repair and compliance assurance.
  • Studiesblueprints, sketches, or specifications, and calculates dimensions.
  • Performs welding duties using wire welding GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding), or SMAW (Stick Welding).
  • Maintains equipment and machinery.
  • Uses blueprints to determine locations, positions, or dimensions,understands, reads, and draws isometric drawings.
  • Tests and inspects vessel and /or piping systems for leaks or defects.
  • Installs, troubleshoots, repairs,and replaces broken valves, pipes, or joints using hand and power tools, gas torches, and welding equipment.
  • Works with crew in learning to perform manual labor in installing, repairing, and maintaining piping, valves, meters, and pumps.
  • Cleans internal / external exchangers, reactors,and other equipment / hydro-blasting.
  • Provides manual labor to clean, repair, and move product.
  • Use, clean, organize, and repair basicpneumaticor electric tools.
  • Responsible forkeeping site and grounds clean and neat.
  • Picks up necessary supplies and tools from warehouse or vendors as directed.
  • Performs work safely in accordance withdepartmental safety procedures and operates equipment safely.
  • Available to workovertime and callouts as required.
  • Available for on-call after hours work as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.



Special assignments or tasks assigned to the employee by their supervisor, as determined from timeto time in their sole and complete discretion.

Experience

Five (5) years of industrial experience and previous pipe welding experience and be able to pass a weld certification test as a condition of employment. Weld test is SMAW, 2" SCH XXH piping, 6G position, 100% X-ray.

Education Level

High school diploma or general education development certificate (GED).

Required Skills

Proficient in computer usage including Microsoft Office Suite and computer maintenance management software (i.e. SAP) or similar maintenance management software.

Supervisory/Managerial Responsibility

May lead the work of contractors.

Work Conditions

Office and field based, with up to 5% travel by land and air required. Petroleum refinery, warehouse/plant environment, out-of-doors environment, driver based environment including but not limited to chemicals, pressure vessels, tanks, rotating equipment, exposure to the risk of electrical shock, and working in confined spaces. Subject to all temperatures, weather, and road conditions.

Physical Requirements

Job conditions require standing, walking, sitting, twisting, stooping, crouching, kneeling, talking or hearing, making visual inspections, making precise hand and finger movements, reaching or grasping, lifting and/or carrying up to 50lbs, pushing and/or pulling up to 50lbs, climbing up to 200 ft, ability to operate and drive all assigned company vehicles at company standard insurance rates is essential, valid state driver license and proof of insurance, perceiving color differences, wearing personal protective equipment (beards not permitted), and strenuous physical activity.
