Overview

This is a hybrid role, with the expectation that time working will regularly take place inside and outside of a company office. This role will be located in Raleigh or Charlotte, NC.

The Senior Director Business Risk Advisory for the First Citizens Wealth Business, which includes Investment Advisory, Trust, Asset Management and Private Banking. The Senior Director Business Risk Advisory is part of the first line of defense and is responsible for consulting with, educating and supporting the First Citizens Wealth Business on the execution of the first line risk programs, promoting an environment of risk awareness and risk ownership across the Bank while adhering to the Company's Risk Appetite and Corporate Strategy. A key component of this position is driving problem solving, prioritization and risk identification/mitigation in fast-paced environments and it requires a deep understanding of the business needs and priorities. The ability to capture, understand, report, and maintain large amounts of information is essential. A person who is highly organized, passionate about problem solving, and enjoys the mastery of details is ideal for this job. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Interacts, partners and presents to Senior and Executive Management to understand the risks/challenges within the business, business changes and other significant events that could significantly affect the firm or adherence to regulatory requirements and risk appetite
  • Knowledge of Wealth Management at a strategic and operational level
  • Functional understanding of broker-dealer and registered investment advisor compliance

Responsibilities

  • Risk Strategic Activities - Partners with Business Risk & Controls leader and senior management to create risk management strategies ensuring key risks are appropriately managed and are aligned. Advises on BU risk considerations for business and/or strategic plans. Effectively challenges risk programs outputs, ensuring bank and regulatory alignment. Manages and recommends enhancements to internal controls, ensuring control testing is in place and results are in line with the Control Standards.
  • Risk Governance and Reporting - Oversees the development of BU risk reports that provide comprehensive view of risks that impact the BU and monitors BU risk and control performance. Oversees the communication of Top and Emerging trends and actions needed to address impacts. Ensures established BU Risk Limits are appropriately incorporated into core processes and are aligned with the Bank's risk appetite. Partners with BU senior leadership in relevant risk governance meetings, utilizing an understanding of the BU operations, risks, controls and related laws and regulatory guidance. Ensures timely communication around current and emerging issues and regulatory requirements.
  • Risk Program Implementation - Provides feedback and collaborates on relevant governance documents to support BU activities and manage risk. Oversees the implementation of risk program policies, standards and procedures. Coordinates risk assessments to evaluate and manage key risks. Partners with BU and stakeholders to develop action plans and mitigation strategies to address root causes and prevent issue recurrence. Partners with other functions (i.e. Compliance, 2LOD) to ensure alignment with broader risk management and governance objectives. Oversees regulatory inquiries, examinations, and audits in collaboration with internal stakeholders along with regulatory submissions, response and reporting requirements, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timely submission. Monitor regulatory developments and findings and assess their potential impact on the organization's risk profile and regulatory compliance.
  • Managerial Functions - Leads Advisory associates and teams, establishing expectations to achieve departmental goals and the Bank's business priorities. Makes appropriate changes to team processes, procedures and efficiencies to meet objectives. Manages the performance training and evaluation of staff. Maximizes department achievements by providing professional development. Participates in mandatory risk training and educates BU personnel on key risk programs and topics. Develops and manages short- and long-term staffing needs.

Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree and 12 years of experience in Financial Services and First Line Risk Management, Enterprise Risk or Operational Risk

OR

High School Diploma or GED and 16 years of experience in Financial Services and First Line Risk Management, Enterprise Risk or Operational Risk

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advance Degree
  • Experience in Wealth Management at a strategic and operational level
  • Functional understanding of broker-dealer and registered investment advisor compliance
  • Interacts, partners and presents to Senior and Executive Management to understand the risks/challenges within the business, business changes and other significant events that could significantly affect the firm or adherence to regulatory requirements and risk appetite
  • Knowledge of operational and enterprise risk management, including identification, assessment, and escalation of risk issues Ability to track and coordinate large complex processes
  • Knowledge of regulatory guidance pertaining to enterprise and operational risk as well as risk control frameworks
