General Summary and Responsibilities
Directs and oversees daily operations of drug distribution for the department in concert with management and pharmacist staff. This position will oversee the inventory control (IC) pharmacy technician staff.

Responsibilities:

  • Monitors workflow volume.
  • Organizes prioritizes and delegates work assignments.
  • Develops and implements systems and controls to improve accuracy and efficiency within area of responsibility.
  • Contributes to review, development, and maintenance of departmental administrative policies and procedures.
  • Selects, trains, supervises and evaluates designated personnel.
  • Monitors work performance, provides guidance, appropriate feedback and initiates disciplinary actions as warranted.
  • Administers, interprets, enforces and communicates hospital and departmental personnel policies and procedures.
  • Provides decision support for department strategic planning and development of long and short-term goals and objectives.
  • Collects and analyzes department statistics, identifies, interprets and communicates trends and develops recommendations to achieve specified goals and objectives.
  • Advises Operations Manager on issues and prepares special reports.
  • Fills and delivers medication orders.
  • Dispenses standing inpatient medication orders.
  • Schedules provision of special syringe, oral dosage and IV products as requested.
  • Delivers cassettes and individual medications to units and collects new medication orders according to established procedures and schedules.
  • Prepares patient medications in accordance with established protocols, methods and techniques.
  • Measures, mixes and compounds automated TPNs, irrigations, chemotherapy drugs and parenteral and oral medications in specified volumes, dosages and concentrations.
  • Prepares special dilutions of non-controlled and controlled substances, IV and research study medications as needed.
  • Labels and records manufactured medications as required.
  • Performs quality controls checks of medication orders and doses distributed following established procedures and schedules.
  • Compares pharmacy and nursing records to ensure match of medication orders.
  • Counts and reconciles actual dosages dispensed, delivered and remaining in medication bins against pharmacy and nursing records. Identifies, documents, researches and reports and/or resolves errors, discrepancies and unused doses, as required.
  • Performs routine quality control and equipment maintenance tasks according to established procedures and schedules and prepares and maintains related logs and records.
  • Responds to requests for routine factual information.
  • Serves as liaison to inpatient units regarding dispensing and distribution of patient medications.
  • Reviews and discusses individual patients' therapies with nursing staff, identifying special patient needs and projecting quantities of medications required.
  • Communicates with pharmacists and other technical staff to plan and provide services.
  • Receives and fills pharmaceutical supply requests for nursing units, satellite locations and other areas.
  • Monitors, restocks and rotates supplies, including controlled substances, removing and replacing outdated products and processing related patient charges and credits.
  • Restocks emergency codes cart trays and prepares and maintains corresponding logs and records.
  • Assists nursing staff in completing scheduled controlled substance inventory.
  • Performs all automated dispensing functions.
  • Maintains knowledge of current professional trends and practices.

Requirements

  • Current registration as a Pharmacy Technician by the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy.
  • Current certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board or National Healthcare Association.
  • Completion of a Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy approved training program or a minimum of 500 hours worked as a pharmacy technician trainee.
  • Experience in Pharmacy Inventory Control
