Summary

Reports directly to the Chief Field Engineer and manages a Field Engineer/Rodman. Responsible for computing and laying out the work as well as checking installations by company crews and subcontractors for compliance with field engineering standards. Checks all work for compliance with contract documents and coordinates work by subcontractors.

Oversee the physical layout of work and coordinate with Chief Field Engineer and Superintendent to ensure compliance with contract specifications by company and subcontractors.


Essential Functions

  • Provide grid line offsets and benchmarks for trades.
  • Research contract documents and review approved shop drawings.
  • Maintain accurate as-built drawings and sketches.
  • Has basic knowledge of Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry.
  • Calculate dimensional data for layout work.
  • Has common knowledge in the use of all survey equipment and data collector.
  • Review submittals and coordinate with topographic drawings prepared by Project Engineers.
  • Coordinate with Superintendent and schedule layout crews to perform without delays.
  • Ensure safety program procedures are maintained in work areas.
  • Attend all required project meetings.
  • Monitors subcontractors' work to ensure tolerances are being met.
  • Maintain a good working relationship with Subcontractors.
  • Coach and train levels of newer engineers, rodmen, etc., to advance their development.


Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned.


Working Conditions

Most work occurs on construction sites. Due to daily condition changes on construction projects, when employees are outside of the office trailer or structure they must wear appropriate personal protective equipment as required by the company's safety policies and as required for weather conditions.


Physical Abilities

Sitting 30 - 50% of time on job.

Critical abilities: standing and walking 50 - 70% of time on job; climbing (stairs and ladders) average 10 times a day; stooping, kneeling, bending 20% of time on the job; repeated use of hands (typing, using hand tools, writing) 20% of time on the job; communicate (talking) 75% time on the job; hearing (phones, radios, alarms, general construction activity) 100% of time on the job; 20/20 vision (natural or with glasses or corrective lenses) and ability to detect small objects; able to wear Personal Protective Equipment (safety glasses, harnesses, hard hats, etc.) every day in required areas on the job; working at heights and in confined spaces 20% of time on the job; working in heat, cold, rain, snow, and ice = 20% of time on the job.

Helpful abilities: able to lift 40 pounds or more; push and pull objects weighing 50 pounds or more; able to identify and distinguish between colors.



Education, Experience, and Knowledge

  • Technical training or coursework in surveying, civil engineering, or a related field. Five years of relevant years of experience in the construction industry may be substituted for formal education.
  • Basic survey skills and knowledge of the correct and safe usage of surveying instruments including total station and equipment.
  • Experienced in using surveying software such as TSI, SMI, and COGO.
  • Experienced in blueprint reading and understands contract documents.
  • Has common knowledge of Algebra, Ordinary Geometry, and Trigonometry and can accurately calculate dimensional data for layout work.
  • Has a working knowledge of job site tolerances and checks work.
  • Able to organize people, tools, and equipment and plan/manage multiple activities to accomplish desired results.
  • Act in a manner of integrity that shows support for the company, its values, and the employees, while maintaining constant focus on meeting/exceeding customer requirements and expectations.
  • Has basic knowledge of Autocad, Carlson Survey and Excel.
