- Under the direction of the Risk Adjustment and Coding Manager with minimal supervision, the Coding Educator is responsible for the development and delivery of coding education materials, related to provider coding guidelines, coding updates, software updates, coding and billing compliance, and regulatory updates. The educator creates and delivers education to the providers, coding team, auditors, and other licensed providers to improve the quality of documentation to ensure the best quality performance and representation of care provided. The educator provides applicable billing/coding and related reimbursement guidelines, to include federal/state laws and regulatory requirements affecting daily business operations to JHM entities. This information is researched and delivered to providers, coders, auditors and staff through face-to face or virtual communication, regular network publications, electronic and voice communications. This position requires a close working relationship with providers and practice staff, and revenue cycle team members. Extensive knowledge of government regulations and applicable reimbursement laws and regulations is required.

- Monday- Friday 8 AM- 4:30 PM.

- Provide regular provider update training on medical record documentation, including CPT/ICD10 coding rules and regulations.
- Adapt training to meet organizational goals and ensure compliance.
- Conduct coding and billing training for billing specialists, coders, and physicians.
- Create presentations, handbooks, and other training materials.
- Perform independent audits to assess the adequacy of medical record documentation supporting codes selected by providers or coders.
- Analyze provider, division, or department documentation and coding patterns to identify compliance risks and recommend corrective actions.
- Provide feedback to providers on documentation reviews and offer targeted training as needed.
- Research and respond to billing and documentation questions from providers, departments, and staff via the coding helpline. Write articles for the Coding Alert newsletter.
- Ensure compliance with internal policies and regulatory requirements related to coding, billing, and documentation.
- Audit documentation by JHCP providers and JHM entities to ensure adherence to organizational and Medicare regulations.
- Recommend improvements in billing, coding, and documentation processes.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced healthcare environment and adapt training approaches to enhance performance.
- Develop and lead education efforts to improve documentation and coding.
- Knowledge of quality assurance and compliance processes for verifying documentation improvement through standard audit programs.
- Operate standard office equipment such as PCs, calculators, word processors, photocopiers, and general office communication tools.
Qualifications
- Minimum of an Associate's Degree in healthcare or business, or equivalent work experience (2 years of Medical Coding Instructor experience = 1 year of education, totaling 4 years required).
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC from AAPC) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS from AHIMA).
- 10 years of experience in coding, documentation, and reimbursement.
- 5 years of experience in instructional or educational roles, including training small and large groups.
- Experience in auditing, coding, reimbursement, and provider education.
- Strong expertise in coding and auditing.
- High proficiency in adult education and training.
- Familiarity with EMR/EHR systems, electronic billing and coding applications, process improvement, and customer needs assessment.
- Advanced knowledge of physician billing and coding regulations (CPT/ICD10).
- In-depth understanding of clinical coding processes, documentation standards, policies, and procedures.
