The Department of Geological Sciences is part of the Thomas Hariot College of Arts and Sciences at East Carolina University. |
Job Duties |
The postdoctoral scholar is responsible for independent and collaborative development, implementation, and analysis of scientific research in the discipline of Geological Sciences. Responsibilities include managing aspects of the
LIT
GEO Project as directed by the team leadership including community engagement, community outreach, educational program development,, mentoring students, and research tasks contributing toward scholarly productivity and peer-review publications. Duties include: hypothesis development, literature review, collection of pilot data, report writing, and supervising of graduate research students, overseeing data collection procedures, supervising experimental procedures, review of data for quality control, supervision of data entry/data analysis, analysis of research hypothesis, and the development of independent and collaborative presentations and publications. The post-doctoral scholar will be expected to receive training and undergo exchange visits and enrichment activities with other network universities and may also participate in teaching experiences to help prepare them for their future career.
Scholars are expected to demonstrate compliance with established guidelines and regulatory standards for research including biosafety, responsible conduct of research and human subjects training.
Approximately 75% of the postdoctoral scholar's time will be devoted to
LIT
GEO research and up to 25% of this will be independent research.
Approximately 10 % of the postdoctoral scholar's time will be devoted to managing the day-to-day activity of undergraduate and graduate research students.
Approximately 15 % of the postdoctoral scholar's time will be devoted to receiving training, teaching, etc. |
Minimum Education/Experience |
Applicants must hold a PhD in Geoscience, Geology, Geoscience Education, Earth and Planetary Sciences, Environmental Science, Geophysics or closely related field at the start of the PD program.
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Interest and experience working well with people of all backgrounds.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education |
Interest in or have experience with societal-relevant and/or community-based geoscience research, community outreach, community engagement, geoscience education, geoscience outreach, environmental geoscience, water quality, water, soil, and water contamination and other society relevant Geoscience areas. Interest or experience with educational program development and/or assessment is considered a plus. Proficiency in Spanish will be beneficial. |
