Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University is a 51-year-old medical school with a strong primary care orientation. The school established a three-fold mission in 1974 that continues to serve as a guiding framework for our overall educational efforts:
*To increase the supply of primary care physicians serving the state, to improve the health and well-being of the region, and to train physicians who will meet the health care needs of the state.
Brody is a national leader in family medicine, ranking No. 1 in North Carolina and No. 2 nationally in the percentage of graduates who choose careers in family medicine, based on the 2017 American Academy of Family Physicians report on MD-granting medical schools. Brody ranks in the top 10 percent of U.S. medical schools for graduating physicians who practice in the state, practice primary care and practice in rural and underserved areas. Brody graduates currently practice in 83 of North Carolina's 100 counties.
The Department of Family Medicine at
ECU, Brody School of Medicine, is a nationally recognized leader in Family Medicine education. The Family Medicine Department, located in a 120,000 square foot facility, provides a wide variety of comprehensive primary care services for all age groups to include: office based procedural skills, obstetrical care, nutrition services, counseling and psychological support in an integrated care model. |
Job Duties |
The James G Jones Distinguished Professorship in Family Medicine recognizes and provides support to a Department of Family Medicine, Brody School of Medicine faculty member who continues to demonstrate leadership, commitment to teaching, the provision of compassionate care to underserved rural population and serves as role model for faculty and students and East Carolina University.
The Department of Family Medicine seeks a faculty member in the
ECU Brody School of Medicine, Department of Family Medicine for this appointment. The appointment is open to fixed-term or tenure/tenure-track faculty members. The title will be determined by current rank and appointment status. Options include: Full Distinguished Professor (Professor or Clinical Professor) or Distinguished Scholar (Associate or Clinical Associate Professor). The term of the distinguished professor appointment will be no greater than a five-year appointment, renewable prior to expiration, in review with the Department Chair and Executive Dean.
Key Roles and Responsibilities:
- Assume a leadership role in curriculum development and teaching the fundamentals of comprehensive, family-oriented care to medical students at the Brody School of Medicine and to Family Medicine residents, fellows and other learners.
- Contribute to the body of knowledge in primary care through scholarly activity.
- Serve as a leader and role model in the consistent provision of high quality, customer focused, efficient patient care in the ambulatory and hospital setting.
- Serve on department, Medical School and ECU Health committees in leadership and membership roles.
- Serve as an advocate for patients, colleagues, students.
- Serve as mentor to faculty.
- Serve as an advisor to the Chair.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Department Chair.

Minimum Education/Experience |
Current
BSOM faculty member with rank of Associate Professor/Clinical Associate Professor or Professor/Clinical Professor within the department of Family Medicine.
M.D. or D.O. degree from an appropriately accredited institution.
Board Certified in Family Medicine or Osteopathic Family Medicine. |
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation |
NC Medical license.
Board Certification in Family Medicine or Osteopathic Family Medicine. |
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education |
Track record of progressive leadership experience in the Department of Family Medicine.
Administrative experience in medical student and residency programs. |
