Assistant Director of Campus Ministry

Summary

The Assistant Director works with the Director of Campus Ministry to foster the spiritual and religious growth of students and all members of the university community using the four pillars of Campus Ministry at SXU: cultivating spiritual growth, living Mercy, working and educating for justice, and fostering authentic community.
The Assistant Director must be a practicing Roman Catholic with ministry experience and education in Catholic Church liturgy and devotions, doctrine, faith formation, contemporary Church issues, service outreach, social teaching, and leadership formation. The Assistant Director must be competent in working with people of many cultures, ethnicities, religious traditions, and many other diverse groups. The Assistant Director must possess the ability to create and execute programs and serve as a strong ministerial leader. This position requires some evening and weekend hours and occasional overnights.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

1.Responsibilities

  • Reports to the Director of Campus Ministry
  • Assists with all activities of the Department of Campus Ministry including general administration
  • Supports the Director in the recruitment, training, and supervision of Peer ministers
  • Assists in overseeing the development and implementation of the department's planning including outreach to appropriate RSOs
  • Represents Campus Ministry as needed in collaboration with other areas of the university
  • Adheres to all institutional policies and procedures
2.Liturgy and Prayer
  • Assists in the design and enactment of all liturgies and prayer services, including Sunday and weekday Masses
  • Assists in the planning and enactment of major university liturgical celebrations in collaboration with Vice President of Mission and Heritage
  • Exercises leadership of prayer as needed and requested
  • Supports Director in maintaining chapel space for liturgical use


3.Retreats and Faith Formation
  • Assists in the planning and delivery of the annual Busy Persons' Retreat
  • Assists in the planning and delivery of the fall and spring Peer Ministers' retreat
  • Supports the Director in supervising the Peer Ministers in the planning and delivery of additional retreats
  • Assists in developing and leading faith formation groups, Bible studies, and other experiences to nurture and deepen faith on campus

4.Service Outreach and Justice Education
  • Assists in directing and organizing the Spring Break Service Immersion
  • Coordinates and engages with university service partners in service planning and opportunities
  • Assists in developing and leading activities to educate and implement Catholic Social Teaching and Peace and Justice effort
5.Student Peer Minister Leadership Program and Development
  • Assist in directing monthly Student Peer Ministry Training and formation program for all Peer Ministers
  • Assist in facilitating spring application and selection process (part of unified student leadership application coordinated as a division of Student Life)
  • Assist in conducting bi-annual assessment meetings for the Peer Ministers
  • Support the Director in their collaboration with Residence Life to direct regular programming, crisis/emergency management, pastoral care to students, August and January training, ongoing development training

6.Communication and Outreach
  • Assists with advertising Campus Ministry events through a variety of platforms
  • Oversees postings to Campus Ministry social media accounts
7.Pastoral Care
  • Provides pastoral care to members of the university community



Qualifications

  • Requirements
  • Master's degree in ministry, theology, or equivalent field (M.Div. preferred)
  • Practicing Roman Catholic with experience of Catholic Church liturgy and devotions, doctrine, contemporary Church issues, faith formation, social teaching and leadership formation
  • Understanding of Catholic teachings related to Campus Ministry
  • Experience working with young adult or college Campus Ministry
  • Experience in working with students of diverse cultural, ethnic, religious, socio-economic, and other backgrounds
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the mission of Saint Xavier University
  • Knowledge of the charism and tradition of the Sisters of Mercy
  • Highly collaborative, communicative, and empowering work style and the ability to engage creatively and flexibly to meet the needs of the campus community
  • Competency in Microsoft Office software
  • Competency with social media platforms
  • Other duties as assigned

This position requires some evening and weekend hours and occasional overnights.
