Biological Sciences

About the Department

The Missouri S&T biological sciences department provides exceptional, interdisciplinary opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to serve the region and the state. This is accomplished through curriculum and experiences that emphasize experiential learning, community engagement, and hands-on original research. The department's faculty expertise encompasses cell and molecular biology, microbiology, health sciences and environmental biology. Two-thirds of biological sciences faculty have ongoing, active collaborative research projects with colleagues in other sciences, engineering, humanities, and social sciences. The university is investing in biology-related research infrastructure, including a BioPlex building, and it is an exciting time to join and contribute to this dynamic and expanding department.

Job Description

The Biological Sciences Department at Missouri S&T is seeking a qualified applicant to fill the role of Business Support Specialist I. This role is the first point of contact, providing general support, greeting visitors, answering calls, and resolving routine issues.

Key Responsibilities

  • General Office Support:
    • Greet visitors, answer telephones, and provide directions or information
    • Solve routine issues and monitor department email accounts
    • Schedule meetings and assist in general office maintenance
  • Prospective Student Visits:
    • Organize schedules for prospective student visitors by coordinating with admissions offices
    • Schedule meetings, book conference rooms, and prepare welcome packets with detailed department program information
  • Visitor Itineraries:
    • Manage itineraries for visitors such as seminar speakers and visiting researchers
    • Make necessary reservations and travel arrangements for guests
  • Course Scheduling:
    • Enter schedules of courses offered by the Biological Sciences department in the CLSS system
    • Manage course schedule changes, room assignments, and enrollment caps
    • Communicate with course instructors and the department chair, using independent judgment to make recommendations
    • Assign faculty to scheduled courses as directed by the department chair
  • Academic Support:
    • Assist with department textbook adoptions, collect and organize course syllabi, and maintain department listservs
    • Assign student advisors through the Joe'SS system and process additional student forms at the graduate and undergraduate levels
    • Maintain student academic files according to outlined procedures and retention policies
  • Communication and Promotion:
    • Maintain and update the department's websites and social media postings, ensuring content is current, relevant, and engaging
    • Provide assistance to student organizations as needed
    • Maintain promotional materials for undergraduate and graduate programs, ensuring accuracy and appeal
  • Access Management:
    • Manage key access and swipe card access for faculty, staff, and students
    • Coordinate access needs and resolve issues independently to ensure smooth operations and security compliance
  • Other Duties:
    • Perform other duties as assigned, including serving as backup for Business Support Specialist II as needed
Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years of relevant experience
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and solve typical problems without supervisory approval
  • Proficiency in managing schedules, coordinating events, and maintaining accurate records
  • Familiarity with office software and systems (e.g., CLSS, Joe'SS)
Anticipated Hiring Range

The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $15.00 - $15.50/hourly.

Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual's particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.
