DESCRIPTION

The Perinatal Assistant Nurse Manager provides administrative and clinical leadership primarily on the Postpartum unit at Jacobs Medical Center, while also supporting the Labor & Delivery unit. This role is essential in managing the care of obstetrical women and newborns within highly collaborative and dynamic units that experience fluctuating acuity levels, frequent emergencies, and high-risk patients.

Responsibilities include:

  • Care Standards and Coordination: Establishes and upholds care standards to ensure high-quality, cost-effective service delivery, efficient resource utilization, and adherence to regulatory and UCSD Health guidelines. Communicates effectively with interdisciplinary teams to align goals and maintain continuity of care.
  • Leadership and Innovation: Leads multidisciplinary projects and system-wide improvements to enhance patient outcomes. Fosters a culture of collaboration, psychological safety, and adaptability, encouraging open communication and innovative problem-solving within the team.
  • Operations Management: Plans, schedules, and organizes workflows to optimize staff efficiency, space utilization, and resource allocation. Maintains clear, transparent communication regarding expectations, responsibilities, and changes in operations.
  • Staff Oversight: Recruits, supervises, and mentors staff, ensuring compliance with competency, licensure, and certification requirements. Provides constructive feedback, fosters professional development, and promotes an inclusive, team-oriented work environment.
  • Performance Management: Conducts performance evaluations, facilitates staff development through coaching and mentorship, and addresses challenges with professionalism and emotional intelligence. Works closely with Employee Relations/Labor Relations to ensure compliance with action plans while maintaining open and supportive communication with staff.
  • Budget Management: Collaborates with the nursing leaders and Finance to develop and integrate annual operational, capital, and personnel budgets. Communicates financial priorities clearly, ensuring staff understands budgetary considerations and operational constraints.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelors or Master's Degree in Nursing.

  • Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the state of California.

  • BART or BLS at time of hire with commitment to get BART within six (6) months of hire date.

  • NRP certification.

  • Two (2+) years of recent acute care RN experience in Postpartum and/or Labor & Delivery.

  • Proven ability to lead, manage, and collaborate effectively within nursing teams to drive high-quality patient care and operational excellence.

  • Strong critical thinking and decision-making skills to respond to emergent situations, resolve sentinel events, and address complex challenges with sound judgment.

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills that foster trust, teamwork, and seamless collaboration across multidisciplinary teams.

  • Adept at navigating complex team dynamics with emotional intelligence, active listening, and proactive conflict resolution strategies

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's Degree in Nursing (MSN).
  • Relevant clinical area certification (e.g., RNC) or Nursing Administration Certification.
  • Two (2+) years of nursing leadership experience and/or Charge RN experience.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • This position encompasses both clinical and administrative responsibilities.
  • Evening shift coverage is required, with eligibility for shift differentials.
  • Occasional daytime meetings and weekend shifts are required.
  • Must have flexibility to work various hours and locations based on operational needs.
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $128,800 - $252,200 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $61.69 - $120.79

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
