Position Summary
The UNCSA School of Music seeks an enthusiastic, multi-faceted, student-focused teacher to serve as its Assistant Professor of Instrumental Ensembles. The ideal candidate will be an individual of integrity and collegiality, with versatility, creativity, and vision to help the institution proactively engage with a constantly evolving profession.
Description of Responsibilities and Duties
Teaching

  • Conduct Wind Ensemble and other ensembles that may include Chamber Winds, New Music Ensemble, and Symphony Orchestra
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate conducting courses
  • Teach other classes as assigned by the Dean that are appropriate to the candidate's skills and expertise


Administrative

  • In collaboration with the Dean, serve as the architect of the large ensembles calendar, scheduling rehearsals and performances in coordination with UNCSA administrative staff, conductor schedules, guest artists, tours, festivals, and special events
  • Work with conductors, faculty, staff, and administration on repertoire choices and programming for each school year
  • Recruit for the instrumental conducting program
  • Meet with applied faculty each semester to advise and determine student part assignments for all large instrumental ensembles
  • Assist UNCSA administrators in collaborative programming and performances within the university
  • Operate the UNCSA Invitational Band Festival
  • Other duties as assigned by the Dean

Service

  • Assist recruiting efforts of applied faculty, participating in events and programs where the visibility of UNCSA faculty can serve as an asset for recruiting, student success, and morale
  • Develop and maintain relationships with music educators in North Carolina and beyond
  • Support the University's Strategic Plan
  • Service responsibilities include committee work and other activities that benefit the School and its students as assigned by the Dean

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

CONTRACT STRUCTURE
Instead of tenure, UNCSA operates on an expanding contract system, building from 3-year to 10-year terms. In addition, there are three ranks for full-time faculty: Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Full Professor.
Required Qualifications

  • An earned master's degree in music with professional experience equivalent to the terminal degree in music, or an equivalent combination of educational and professional experience
  • A commitment to student success, their health and wellbeing
  • Experience teaching conducting at the university level
  • Professional and/or collegiate wind band conducting experience
  • Demonstrated commitment and effectiveness as a teacher of students of varying levels and backgrounds, and in fostering development and creative talent in young artists
  • Expertise in a broad range of musical genres and styles, with demonstrated experience developing culturally inclusive curricula and diverse programming


Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctor of Musical Arts in Instrumental Conducting
  • Established national and/or international reputation as a conductor of large ensembles with high visibility in the field
  • Classroom teaching experience at the university level
  • Experience in the creation, planning, organization, and operation of conferences, symposiums, and/or large-scale recruiting events
  • Experience conducting pit orchestras for musical theatre, plays, and ballet
  • Active in guest conducting and presenting at professional conferences

Tenure Information UNCSA utilizes a multi-year contract system in lieu of tenure.
