TRIO Programs:

The Upward Bound Project EDGE (Exploration and Determination Guarantees Excellence) program is designed to provide opportunities for fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The goal is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education. Our goal is to recruit participants into the Upward Bound program, retain them, graduate them, and get them ready for post- secondary education, admittance and graduation.

The Opportunity:

UCF's TRIO Programs/Project EDGE seeks candidates for a part-time Academic Coach. The Academic Coach position works with Project EDGE (Edgewater High School) scholars in groups and one-on-one sessions to help students develop effective learning strategies and to become self-regulated learners that achieve academic success at Edgewater High School and virtually.

This is a unique job opportunity for people who enjoy working with students and who have experience in advising, student services, public relations, and other student personnel services. They will work approximately 6 hours per week, Monday through Friday.

Responsibilities:


  • Create and facilitate Project EDGE workshops on academic success, growth mindset, academic support, student success, academic assessment, and college readiness.
  • Provide students with skills and strategies they may need to become self-regulated learners.
  • Help students understand and use effective learning strategies.
  • Help students focus on individual goals and identify steps to reaching those goals.
  • Help students identify and overcome obstacles that may be impeding academic success.
  • Work with students to develop strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Motivate students to take ownership of their own academic success.
  • Document each coaching session.
  • Refer students to other services such as guidance counseling, personal or career counseling, tutoring, or other services.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree or higher and experience working with high school students or college freshmen or an equivalent combination of education and experience pursuant to Fla. Stat. 112.219(6).

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Experience working with first-generation and low-income students.
  • Experience coaching and/or mentoring high school students.
  • Recent undergraduate graduate.
  • Experience creating reports and PowerPoint presentations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Comfortable speaking in front of groups/leading workshops.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to include evening and weekend assignments.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and collaboratively with a positive attitude.

Special Instructions to the Applicants:

Must pass Level 1 and 2 background check per UCF requirements for working with minor youth.

The position is provisional and funded through August 31, 2027, by a grant funded by the U.S. Department of Education/TRIO.
