Science Systems and Applications, Inc. (SSAI) is seeking a qualified technical/engineering support person to support a number of atmospheric remote sensing instrument projects at Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). This job involves both laboratory support for instrument maintenance and development and in-field support for instrument operation. Most responsibilities will be supporting maintenance and development of lidar and radar sensors and associated components. This work is accomplished in fully equipped research laboratories. A range of capabilities is desired, to cover all aspects of instrument work. The successful applicant will also provide field mission support for multiple airborne instruments, to include packing/shipping, set up and integration, on-site trouble shooting and testing. The ability to travel and support both domestic and international field missions of duration up to 4-6 weeks is also required. This position is located at GSFC in Greenbelt, MD.

Required Qualifications:

  • AA and at least 10 years of experience working with instrument development or maintenance in a laboratory setting using multimeters, oscilloscopes, chiller units, power supplies or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to fabricate (crimp or solder) test cable harnesses
  • Willingness to travel (both domestic and international).
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment
  • Extensive electronic engineering design skills, applicable to Radar, LIDAR, assorted electronic circuits.
  • Printed Circuit Board design skills.
  • Working mechanical skills and machining skills.
  • Logistical expertise. Building operations expertise.
  • Experience in Field Deployment planning.
  • US Citizenship required.

Desired Qualifications:

  • BS degree in an engineering field.
  • Experience with lasers or lidar systems.
  • Experience supporting aircraft field missions.
  • Knowledge of proper installation of fluid cooling components when applicable.
  • Simple material properties knowledge and application.
  • Mid-level programming experience.

Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and use hands to touch, handle or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee frequently is required to talk and hear and occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
