Systems Engineer I/II
Overview VIRGINIA Class Propulsion Plant Fluid Systems / Engineered Components (414) - The VIRGINIA Class Propulsion Plant Fluids Systems section is made up of the Reactor Plant Fluid Systems, Steam Plant Fluid Systems and Propulsion Plant Test Equipment. The VIRGINIA Class Engineered Components section is made up of the Pumps, Heat Exchangers and Steam Valve groups. These groups are responsible for developing sound technical solutions to emerging construction problems arising at Electric Boat's Groton Shipyard and Quonset Point Manufacturing Facilities, as well as at Huntington Ingalls Industries - Newport News Shipbuilding. Additionally, the VIRGINIA Class Propulsion Plant Fluid Systems / Engineered Components department, as the lead design yard, provides technical rationale and sound engineering recommendations to the prime contractors (KAPL, and BPMI) and to the Navy for approval. Engineers routinely perform research in all concentrations of engineering to develop innovative solutions to resolve technical issues, perform pressure drop calculations and fluid flow analysis, develop, issue, and support technical work documents and test procedures, revise provisioning and preventative maintenance documents, develop and implement technical manual changes and incorporate advanced technologies into the propulsion plant. The Engineered Components groups are also responsible for design requirements, procurement, qualification testing, delivery, and construction integration. Frequent interaction with component vendors, customers, and government laboratories is required. Occasional travel to vendor facilities is required. The design-build-sustain approach to submarine construction is realized through working in multi-disciplinary teams of engineers, designers, and shipyard operations to ensure that design decisions will result in efficient and build-able products.
