Flint Hills Resources is now hiring a System Optimization Engineer to join our Pine Bend refinery team in Rosemount, MN. As a System Optimization Engineer (SOE), you will have a key role within the Process Control Capability responsible for oil flow optimization, collaboration with commercial counterparts , and control system improvements within your system. The SOE role is a leadership development opportunity that plays a key role in progressing Pine Bend stewardship and optimization vision.

Our Team

The System Optimization Engineer (SOE) is a member of the process control team (with 6 other SOEs) responsible for daily refinery oil flow strategies, collaboration with control engineers and control operators to execute the strategies, and coordination with commercial side counterparts. The SOE role is a leadership development opportunity that plays a key role in progressing Pine Bend's optimization & control advancement goals.

What You Will Do

Oil Flow Optimization

* Develop the optimization strategies for multiple refinery units in your assigned system with goal of maximizing refinery profitability against valid constraints. Clearly communicate the resulting optimization strategies to the production team and assist as needed in implementation.
* Ownership of Daily Objectives/Night Orders in your assigned refinery system. Primary production team contact for issues related to optimization, tactical economic POV, control/operation strategies, and product scheduling
* Provide system capability calls and be an active participant in the daily, weekly, and monthly oil flow planning process including:
* TA and maintenance event oil flow plan vetting and optimization.
* Review and/or development of process plans for oil flow impacts.
* Unplanned event tactical oil flow re-optimization.
* Finished product distribution plans

Control System Improvement

* Drive utilization of new and existing control systems. Become a subject matter expert on control strategies within your assigned system and how to best apply advanced control methods to meet process/economic objectives.
* Leverage your process, controls, and economic knowledge to generate and implement process control advancements as part of an SOE/6th PL/APCE SME triad. Post-audit the results and iterate as needed with goal of advancing from manual control to automated systems.
* Oversight unit performance, including alarm and control system health. Identify improvement ideas based on observed constraints and opportunities. Frame prompt economic drivers and areas of opportunity to drive investment into various business across the refinery.

Commercial Collaboration

* Scheduling and blending of finished products within the refinery. As the owner of your system this includes off-hours point of contact
* Develop relationships with key business partners outside of Pine Bend and be the primary channel for conveying refinery production impacts to your products
* Key stakeholder for aligning refinery production/optimization with product quality/compliance

Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)
* Bachelor's Degree in an Engineering discipline
* Five (5) years or more of refinery experience or equivalent
* Experience with unit operation and process control fundamentals

What Will Put You Ahead
* Experience with refinery process flows and unit interactions
* Knowledge and understanding of refinery economic drivers
* Experience with advanced process control systems

For this role, we anticipate paying $120,000 - $180,000 per year. This role is eligible for variable pay, issued as a monetary bonus or in another form.
