Berkeley Lab's Engineering Division is hiring a Mechanical Engineer to oversee medium to large projects and perform complex mechanical engineering tasks, including design, manufacturing planning, and quality assurance. The role involves conducting and contributing to large or multiple small projects while adhering to budget and schedule constraints. Typical projects may involve particle accelerators, optics, beamline design, magnetic systems, cryogenic systems, and vacuum systems. This is a matrix position requiring flexibility to change assignments as needed.
What You Will Do:
Mechanical Engineer Level 2:
- Utilize CAD and FEA tools for design tasks.
- Independently resolve project issues using engineering principles within the project team.
- Develop practical solutions for small projects, integrating new technologies with established designs.
- Offer guidance to other staff as needed.
- Prepare design specifications, analyses, and recommendations for approval by management.
- Conduct developmental work and write technical reports.
- Collaborate with senior engineers and scientific personnel to clarify project requirements.
In Addition to the Above, Mechanical Engineer Level 3:
- Develop detailed designs for scientific equipment and integration of experimental setups using CAD and FEA tools.
- Oversee engineering, procurement, fabrication, construction, assembly, and pre-installation efforts.
- Proactively assist in resolving issues beyond immediate responsibilities.
- Collaborate with other divisions and scientists on engineering aspects of scientific initiatives, defining procedures and goals.
- Direct technical integration of subsystems, managing requirements, interfaces, and risks.
- Develop project timelines and budgets.
- Coordinate presentations for relevant committees.
- Ensure compliance with EHS and management on safety practices. Implement quality assurance and operational principles, policies, and procedures.
- Contribute to conference presentations and publications.
Additional Responsibilities as Needed:
Mechanical Engineer Level 2:
- Assume responsibility for specific project subtasks and create reporting materials for EVMS for level 2 or 3 managers.
- Direct technical staff as needed throughout the project.
In Addition to the Above, Mechanical Engineer Level 3:
- Supervise technical and professional staff. Occasionally travel to vendors and trade shows as needed.
What is Required:
Mechanical Engineer Level 2:
- BS in engineering or a related field and 2+ years of relevant experience.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical engineering concepts and tools.
- Proven ability to apply engineering principles in designing and implementing projects.
- Minimum 2 years of experience in one or more of the following:
- Modeling techniques for mechanical and thermal systems.
- Modeling for structural composites under structural and hygro-thermal loading.
- Design and fabrication of metallic/composite structures.
- Accelerator vacuum systems and/or cryogenic applications.
- Precision machine design and fabrication.
- Strong oral and written communication skills; effective team player.
In Addition to the Above, Mechanical Engineer Level 3:
- BS in engineering or a related field and 5+ years of relevant experience OR Master's degree in engineering or related field and 3+ years of relevant experience OR equivalent experience.
- Proficient in reading and interpreting assembly, detail, and weldment drawings.
- Knowledgeable in the technical aspects of mechanical and manufacturing items to inform procurement decisions for various projects.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with strong meeting facilitation, organization, and attention to detail for managing multiple priorities.
- Understanding of the project development process, terminology, and quality system requirements.
- Technical knowledge of manufacturing and assembly practices.
- Extensive expertise in mechanical engineering concepts, theories, practices, and tools.
- Proven ability to conduct complex engineering work and lead technical projects, including cost and schedule management.
Desired Qualifications:
Mechanical Engineer Level 2:
- Supervisory experience.
- Composite Design and Manufacturing.
- Precision Machine Design.
In Addition to the Above, Mechanical Engineer Level 3:
- Experience in an R&D or technical environment, including supervisory roles.
Salary:
Mechanical Engineer Level 2:
This position is expected to pay a targeted range of $106,000.00 to $129,000.00 annually and has a full salary range of $94,164.00 to $158,856.00 annually. The final salary is dependent upon the candidate's skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.
Mechanical Engineer Level 3:
This position is expected to pay a targeted range of $130,000.00 to $158,000.00 annually and has a full salary range of $115,176.00 to $194,340.00 annually. The final salary is dependent upon the candidate's skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.
Notes:
- This is a full-time 2-year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
