AIS is looking for a Biological Sampling Program Analyst to support the Greater Atlantic Region Fisheries Office (GARFO) of the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS).

Primary Function:

The Biological Sampling Program Analyst is responsible for the comprehensive review, auditing, analysis, and compilation of biological sampling program data. This role ensures the integrity, accuracy, and representativeness of biological sample collections in relation to annual sampling requests. The incumbent will assess and interpret landing statistics across various fisheries, gear types, and geographic regions utilized by the commercial fishing industry, verifying that data collection aligns with scientifically representative sampling methodologies.

Additionally, ensuring completeness and accuracy in the recorded data for each individual sample is paramount. Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Ensure quality of collected biological samples is consistent with program and agency standards as described in the sampling program manual and work instructions or other documentation provided by the government.
  • Compile and analyze summaries of collected samples in comparison to landings of requested species using same stratification as sample request.
  • On an ongoing basis, review collected samples in comparison to annual request and provide comment on any deficiencies found; over- or under-sampling detected; and any departures from program and agency standards.
  • Compare quarterly sample request against corresponding tracking form and provide comment on any discrepancy found.
  • Perform bi-weekly audits of individual records of biological sampling data reported into Biological Sampling Monitoring Database (BSMDBS) and prepare reports of audit results for collected samples for distribution and review; and manage flow of audit resources.
  • Participate in the design, testing, and implementation of improvements to the sampling program including the use of new methods, equipment (e.g., electronic sampling equipment), and software.
  • Prepare and maintain documentation (e.g., sampling manual, work instructions, online guides) for use by port samplers.
  • Attend meetings and conferences related to the sampling program and develop content for presentation at same.
