The Director of Research Conflict of Interest (COI) is a key leadership role within the Office of the Deputy Provost for Research at Thomas Jefferson University. This individual will be responsible for overseeing and managing the research COI program for TJU (academic business unit) researchers and faculty, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations and policies regarding conflicts of interest in research. The Director of Research Conflict of Interest will work closely with faculty, researchers, administrative staff, and institutional leadership to oversee policies and procedures for identification, disclosure, and management of conflicts of interest, ensuring integrity and transparency in TJU research activities. The role involves strategic decision-making, highlights collaboration across departments, and plays an active leadership role in regulatory and policy development.

Job Description

Essential Functions

  • Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson.
  • Continue to develop and lead Thomas Jefferson University research COI program, including daily oversight and long-term planning.
  • Develop, implement, maintain, and educate stakeholders on policies and procedures related to conflicts of interest in research
  • Ensure the institution's compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations, including managing annual and transactional COI disclosures.
  • Lead strategic initiatives aimed at improving COI management and oversight practices
  • Oversee the review and evaluation of all disclosures to identify potential conflicts
  • Collaborate with researchers and faculty to develop robust management plans for identified conflicts
  • Monitor ongoing compliance with approved COI management plans, working closely with the Institutional Conflicts of Interest Committee and other institutional stakeholders
  • Design and lead training programs aimed at promoting awareness and understanding of COI issues among faculty, researchers, and administrative staff
  • Serve as the institution's subject matter expert and trusted advisor on matters related to research-related COI regulations and management
  • Provide ongoing educational resources to the research community
  • Serve as the administrative liaison and resource to the University institutional COI Committee, providing governance-related support, regular reports, and insights on COI cases and policies
  • Collaborate with the Office of Legal Affairs, the Enterprise Office of Corporate Compliance, Office of Research Support Services, Jefferson Office of Human Research Protection, Office of Technology Transfer, and other university offices to ensure coordinated management of financial interests and relationships among researchers, TJU, and other interested parties
  • Stay up to date with federal and state regulatory changes and incorporate them into institutional policies
  • Recommend updates to institutional COI policies and procedures, as needed
  • Ensure institutional compliance with federal COI reporting requirements, including preparing and submitting necessary reports to agencies like the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF)
  • Supervise a team of COI professionals, including compliance analysts, administrative staff, providing guidance, performance management, and fostering a collaborative work environment.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Education:

  • Master's degree in related field (e.g., Public Health, Research Administration, Legal Studies preferred; PhD JD, or equivalent, preferred)

Experience:

  • 5-10 years of experience in research compliance, conflict of interest management, or research administration within a large academic or research institution.
  • Demonstrated experience with COI regulatory requirements and management systems, particularly in research environments.
  • Computer skills in a PC/Windows environment, including MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, demonstrated by application materials and previous experience.
  • Excellent written communication skills and attention to detail, as demonstrated by application materials.

Minimum Certifications, Registration or License Requirements:

  • Certification in Healthcare Research Compliance (desired)
